I was going to sell my 2008 macbook pro, but then the new models hit and lowered the resell price by like 500 dollars or something and I was like "why bother?"

Either way, I still think it is in my best interest to sell this MBP and get an iMac, because it will better serve my needs, and I am not really gaining anything from having a mobile workstation.

At this point I will be in Oregon in a little bit over a month, and I was thinking that I would save myself 200$ by waiting (sales tax lol), but I was wondering how long Apple continues the "free iPod touch" thing. It isnt year round is it?

Also, because of the current price of 4GB RAM sticks, and the fact that mac laptops just got a massive upgrade in specs, I was entertaining the idea of "waiting"

    .....yeah.

it'll definitely be going until the end of the back to school season. I'd guess it'll end somewhere in september?

Hrm. So I either buy as soon as I get to oregon, or I gamble on an iMac update later this year and sacrifice the free iPod.

There is little to gamble because the iMac is probably due for update in mid-late fall.

IMO the free ipod thing is somewhat of a gimmick. You only get a $229 towards an ipod (which almost everyone already has or we have iphones). The real downside is that you are buying the models right before they make really good updates and possibly new models in the fall. IMO its a much better wait it out and buy in the fall. You are likely to save wayy more than $229 and get much better power and features. Im also intrested in the iMac for gaming purposes, but as a student I move 2-3 times a year so... I would go with a macbook and a cheap hdtv or external monitor if you really need. The macbook pros are basically as good as the iMacs for almost anything besides extremely pro work and gaming.

There's always going to be an update later on. Just whether it's in the fall or early winter. It seems like a fall update would be so early. Would the new CPUs even be out by then?

Plus, the rebate thing is mail-in/internet so you'll have to pay the fee upfront (which not everyone can really do). Yes, it'll be free after you get the money back but you still have to pay for it upfront.

Also, Apple's doing this promo because they're clearing inventory for the new iPod's. They Touches and Nanos are supposed to come out with a camera so maybe you'd want to wait? While the Touch may not be free, you can probably get double the HD size plus a camera for the same price as the ones now.

I was just thinking that being able to sell the iPod would reduce the cost of my mac effectively. I already have an iPhone that I am more than satisfied with.

Basically I run logic on my MBP and was having minor issues in some of my bigger projects with overloads, but there are workarounds that I didnt even bother looking into that would probably fix everything. The main reason I want an iMac is the big screen. I have a 19inch (crappy low res) monitor from a desktop I used years ago, but working in logic on this little 15 inch screen makes workflow not as smooth.

Anyway, at this point it definitely looks like I should wait for the update. Is it likely to be a complete overhaul ala recent macbook pros, or just a slight update like early 2009 refresh?

I'm currently trying to sell my 2nd gen iPod Touch (16 GB) to my friend if he wants it. Most likely he wouldn't pay more than $200 since he can just wait for the new ones with better features. However, since you'd be getting it for free, if you happen to sell it, you'd be earning money, while I wouldn't since I got the Touch when it came out last October.

I doubt it'd be a complete overhaul (like last fall's). It'd probably just be upgrading processors, and maybe RAM/HD and improving stuff and it'd come with Snow Leopard instead of Leopard.
