I am typing on my new Macbook Pro right now :)

    I have owned a Macbook Pro Core Duo 17", Asus A8Js, and a V2Je

I have to say the screen on this is by the BEST I have ever seen.

The black levels are perfect and the viewing angles are amazing.

I get no bleeding at the bottom and top part of the screen. I am extremely satisfied. It's so nice to goto this screen after using primarily 14" screens which have horrible vertical viewing angles.

I am at work right now but when I get home tonight I will take some pictures of it.

I have been waiting for this update for a while, I actually ordered it from the Apple store this morning and when I found out they were in stock in the local apple store, so i just canceled my order and picked one up during work :)

I also got the iPod 30g and printer ($300 in rebates), which I happened to need because my nano stop holding a charge.

How's the heat with the new Santa Rosa chip? Also, come back later today and let us know how the battery life is :) If you're planning on going with 4 gigs of ram, check out the 2-gig sticks on Newegg for $135 shipped each:

Very interested to hear your impressions!

Did you get a glossy or non-glossy screen?

And can you check the clocks of the 8600M GT in it? Apple have underclocked their GPUs in the past...

This is the exact configuration I've been waiting for. Parallels is to the point where I can switch without looking back; now that you can max out at 4 gigs of ram I can put 2 gigs in XP under Parallels and 2 gigs in OS X. Perfect! The ram is like $400 cheaper if you install it yourself, too ;) I'm debating waiting for the 200gb 7200rpm hard drive from Hitachi that's supposed to be released to consumers this summer for $250. Dell and Alienware laptops already have it...an extra 40 gigs would be really nice in the long haul. My only gripe is that it's such a pain to swap out hard drives in a MacBook Pro...not hard to take apart but a real pain to reassemble lol.

I have the matte screen, I don't like glossy screens. The color/saturation is very good.

How can I check the GPU clocks in OS X?

Any other programs or bench marks people want me to check? (in OSX)

    I will install bootcamp/windows tonight.

I don't think whether you know it or not, but you are of the first users here to get your hands on a 8600GT
How many Windows games do you have ?
You can really make a good review off it (And the internet is almost devoid of solid, real-life benchmarks for 8600GT).
If you want, first make a "first impression" review fast and then [in the holidays] make a full review.

I was the first person to buy it at the Apple store :)

the employees didn't even really know what was going on, just said they got a bunch of new boxes in the back.

I don't do much 3D gaming anymore besides War3 Dota. (waiting for Quakewars & TF2)

I will give 3DMark a try once I get bootcamp running.

Anyway, I am extremely happy so far with this purchase so far.

Um, that's a good question. I'm not sure if you can, haha. Well you can do that easily enough in Windows since there should be a plethora of gfx overclocking programs that can check clock speeds.

I suppose the standard benchmark programs apply: SuperPi and 3Dmark06. If you have any recent PC games lying around to test gfx performance, that'd be nice. If not, oh well. And when you have time, can you test battery life?

Which 15 inch version did you get?

congrats, im really surprised a 15" LED backlight would come out so soon but its suited for a mac to have it first.
Id love to take a pantone spyder to it. It would rock!

i might have to go to the Apple store today and see if they have any 17" 1920x1200 models in stock. I can't imagine that resolution being usable at all however, sure if all you do is work on massive massive photos it should be fine, but reading any menu would just be an absolute pain, especially with Pro software like final cut studio, hmm. . .

1680x1050 looks perfectly fine to me :D

I'd definitely be interested in some game benches with the 8600GT as well as battery life (what difference the LED display makes). Those are probably the two biggest things that can be tested objectively.

Hard to do a decent review of game benches when I won't be boot-camping. The only real decent bench marking tool for Mac's i've found was XBench, anyone know of something similar to 3dMark for the Mac?

Does anyone know if the screen is actually thinner than the previous MBP? I thought LED backlits were supposed to be thinner, but Apple is still saying 1" thick. I'm hoping they thinned the screen and made the main chassis thicker to improve airflow while still maintaining 1".

The main chassis measures in at 18mm, the screen at barely 10mm. I don't have one to compare it to, so anyone have the metric measurements for the older model? I highly doubt its changed, they'd normally use the same chassis.

^^^highly doubt it, wouldn't be worth the cost to change the casing that much, and cooling was improved with the last update wasn't it? even if only slightly.

not to mention the screens are already super super thin.

Is it just the angle of the camera, or does it look like the screen in that video only tilt to about 100 degrees? That seems *really* narrow, especially if the notebook's on my lap. Seconding xprohx's question.
