    Hey Guys,

I just came across this in another forum and thought that I would post it here for everyone's benefit. Apparently, someone on Macrumors has recieved their Unibody 17" MBP. Here is the link to the thread with the pictures.

    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=653149

Now if only Apple will get these MBPs in their stores..... :p

The glossy is more beautiful with its black bezel around the screen whereas the silver bezel on the matte option does not match with the black keyboard.

    Well now ---------- It's finally here !!!!!!

I too would welcome a review of the 17".

I predict that most will want to see "Battery" use and run time claims above anything else. This alone might set the stage for future  models using fixed batteries or not !!!!!!

Most probably it will either be the test bed "Prom Queen" or the "Freddy Krugger" of models. My hope is for the former.

Considering the previous generation 17" MBPs aren't actually as big as one would think, I would reckon that the same applies for the new unibodies. In the previous generation, the 17" were only about an inch wider than the 15" MBPs in their foot print, and about the same depth.

Also I agree with the slash X, I want to see the real world performance of the much touted battery.

The bezel is thinner in the 17 inch, and as such the 17's dimensions are not very much bigger than the 15's. I know because I have one on order and its dimensions fit in my current backpack's 15.4" padded laptop slot.

    17 foreva!

You serious ???? Are they that close to each other dimension wise ????

I have not checked the dimension specks on the 17" yet. I certainly didn't realize this if true.

Certainly would blow other 17" units out of the water size wise.

Slash X, from what I have observed in the previous generation, the 17" are not that different dimensions wise when compared to 15" variants. I am sure that this dimension difference applies to (or has even been narrowed) in the unibody versions of the 15" and 17".

The 17" is about 2cm deeper and 3cm wider than the 15", so not that close.

you CAN replace the battery, you'll just void the warranty.

also, it seems the bottom is just one plate as opposed to the 2 on the current 15" so I suspect it'll be a bit more sturdy. regardless of how "its not that much bigger" than the 15, its a bit too big for my taste as I have previously owned an Asus 17 which is the ODM design for the mbps.

Blazezaku thanks for posting that link. Its amazing what these guys have done on a brand new MBP. The position of the battery and the realtively easy access to the HD is now having me regret the purchase of a 15" MBP over the 17"...oh well...

Hey. I am in Canada and I ordered mine just recently with the matte screen option. I won't be getting mine for a loooong time (March 24 expected delivery)

    MBP 15":
    Height:
    2.41 cm (0.95 inch)
    Width:
    36.4 cm (14.35 inches)
    Depth:
    24.9 cm (9.82 inches)
    Weight:
    2.49kg (5.5 pounds)

    MBP 17"
    Height:
    2.50 cm (0.98 inch)
    Width:
    39.3 cm (15.47 inches)
    Depth:
    26.7 cm (10.51 inches)
    Weight:
    2.99 kg (6.6 pounds)1

I don't think that is a big difference personally, but some might. The best part for me is comparing it to my Asus Z70V 15.4" that it will be replacing:

    Z70V 14" x 10.7" x 1.34"

Add 1.5" inches to width, yes, but the depth and thickness are actually LESS. Booyakasha!

Yeah, the 17" MBP is definitely comparable (in size) to many, especially older, windows-based 15" notebooks. I'd love to see one in person; hopefully they'll start showing up at Bestbuy and FutureShop soon.

    Ohhhhhohhhhhhooooooo

    From the ifixit post:
    "12,820 mAh capacity"

    Ahhhhhhaahhhahhahahahahhhhh. [Uncontrollable shaking]

For comparison, a brand new OLD 15" has 5600 mAh. The new ones have much less (how much exactly?) because they use less power.

    Nearly 13,000??? Built-in battery FTW!!

I know I am really psyched about this 8 hr battery life bit. Its going to be amazing. I guess with 8 hrs of battery life, carrying around a second battery is a moot point.

Once you go 17" and get used to it, it's quite hard to go back to 15" and not feel that it's kind of small.

I dont see how approx an inch longer and deeper, and a pound heavier makes a laptop that much more cumbersome
With the 17" MBP you get a full fledged WUXGA high res beautiful screen with 77% more pixels. If you do programming those 77% more pixels are a godsend :)

Yeah, it's starting to become an easy sell for me. :)

But I'd still like to see one in person before getting it. I'm hoping the local shops will start getting them soon. I already sold my 15" MBP over the weekend and I'm soo missing OSX. :(

Although it wasn't really a serious test, the owner of the 17" on the thread I linked to in my first post, is claiming 5 hr and 25 min of battery life with WiFi, full brightness on the screen, and constant hard drive access...

Calling the Apple store San Francisco every day, nothing so far. They told me they get blind shipments every day, they don't know if those have MBP 17" in them or not.

I really want this for the battery life and also the screen size, but don't fool yourself these are HUGE and HEAVY. Despite the fact that they are the smallest 17" notebooks on the market, and the lightest HD-resolution notebooks on the market. It's pretty much the same weight/dimensions as the existing 17". Think big ;)

That test was with the dedicated gfx card enabled.

Extrapolating this to an informed guess with integrated graphics would be about 6 hours 30 minutes.

It's their "wireless productivity" test which I think means display at 50% (has a big impact) and light CPU and HD load, with WiFi enabled.

I guess it's a realistic best case scenario. If you actually use your notebook for anything but web browsing, you will get less.

I just visited a local FutureShop and an Apple rep was there doing a demo. I had a chat with him and he assured me that most if not all stores will be getting the 17" by the end of the month. So hopefully by this time next week. Can't wait to see it before picking it up.

Hmmm... Have you considered waiting for next year MBPs ? They're gonna have intel Nehalem CPUs which will be a big jump architecturally and performance wise, and also hopefully include USB 3.0 ?
As the next year architecture will be such a big jump, the current gen might also take a big hit in resale value..

Why is it bad if someone wants to spend that kind of money on a laptop if they can afford it? I paid full retail for my 2.53 MBP from Best Buy..$2699.99 + taxes, what is wrong with that? Does that make me stupid? Heck no. I can afford it, it didn't affect me financially because I have a job, I still own a house, I still go to school, and I am glad about my purchase.

I'm not just targeting you specifically, wearetheborg, but to those kinds of statements that make it sound like it's bad to spend the money to buy a laptop.

If somebody wants to buy it and can afford it obvously, who the hell do you think you are to say otherwise? You have no right to judge people based on what they buy or speak down on them, or call them stupid for making this stupid purchase blah blah blah...

How are you getting that I disapprove of getting a $3000 laptop ?
All I asked was if it was going to be a 3000 CAD purchase.

The 17" MBP seems to be a phat laptop, and I dont recall having said EVER anything about people being stupid for buying expensive laptops
Heck, I've been a proponent of the 17" MBP in this thread itself:

To be fair to wearetheborg, I never took his post in any way as degrading for my spending 3k on a notebook. And it's more like spending $1500 for it as I just sold my MBP (in sig) for $1500 which was a good price for me.
