I'm gonna buy a Mac mini. Then I have something to play with while I wait for the new Macbook Pro's. Two questions:

    1. How much memory should I put in it? 1gb, 1.5gb or 2gb? I tend towards the 2gb ...

    2. Which display to attach to it? Apple cinema display best choice on the market? What about other brands? And what about those LED displays that people are talking about?

    Thanks

OS X likes RAM. The more the merriest... but it isn't exactly strightforward to upgrade the mini's RAM, and it will void your warranty. I heard that the HD was quite slow as well, perhaps you should consider exchanging it too.
Apple Cinema Display looks good, but I'd also see cheaper options in the market, specially on the lower end. They're rather overpriced.

For the price I dont think the cinema displays are worth it. I just got a dell2007wfp on sale, its very very nice, lots of connection options and was about 1/2 the price of the apple. I would suggest shopping around and spending the money you save on a screen on extra ram or an extenal hard drive to complement the mini.

ps the minimum RAM I would put in the mini is 1gb.

I would get at lest 1 GB of RAM and go with one of the widescreen Dells. They are cheaper and much more versatile. Also, while the mini is a nice little machine, don't expect it to be blazing fast.

What is it exactly that I shouldn't expect to be able to do with my mac mini? I can live without the need for video editing or the latest games, but I still would like the system to respond fast when I do daily tasks.

Should I insist on a 7200rpm drive (maybe the new seagate?) or rather the standard upgrade option of 160 gb 5400rpm?

A faster hard drive and the most ram you can afford should make it fast enough for you.

A 160 gb 5400 harddrive has only slightly lower performance than a 100gb 7200 drive, and you get 60 gb more storage space. Though if the 7200 drive is bigger than 100 gb, go for that one.
I believe the dell has slightly better specs (faster response time), but that could be the old ones. I do know they come from the same manufacturer. Samsung and HP also have 30" screens available with the same resolution, don't know how good they are in comparison though.

You probably will not see any slowdown with the 5400RPM drive, and you get 60% more space. Win/win!

the mini will be fantastic for all daily tasks, sounds like it will be a great match for what you need right now.
