My macbook seems to be getting quite hot, a moment ago it hit 78 degrees and i was just running firefox, msn and football manager. Earlier today it got into the 70's while i was just streaming a movie.

    Are these temperatures perfectly normal?

I dont want to have to pay for a cooler or anything

edit: also i have smc fan running with the fan at 3000rpm and i'm still regularly in the mid 60's. Right now i'm at 72

Check your processor usage in Activity Monitor. It could be that some background process is hitting it hard...

doesn't seem to be anything out of the norm. It's cooled down right now, chilling at around 55, but it fluctuates a lot and the fan is still at 3000 rpm

Are there vents somewhere on the MB? Maybe they're blocked in some way, preventing heat from escaping. On the MBP the vent is actually on the hinge of the monitor...

There are vents where the hinge is, and there does not seem to be anything blocking them.

If this is not normal i can always go exchange it for a new one. I bought i on Sunday so i can still exchange / return

To kind of compare, my MBP idle's at about 55 degrees celsius, according to iStatPro. I peak at about 80 degrees when rendering stuff and gaming. So, it could be that your MB is in good shape.

I have my fans set at 2500 and it'll be anywhere from 59-64. The other day I was using it on a desk at somebody elses house and it was around 50. Don't know why I guess it just doesn't like the setup I have here in my room. You can take it to an apple store and get them to look at it, worst they'll say is theres nothing wrong sorry nothing we can do.

It also depends on your ambient air temperature. Whats the temperature in your room?

Are you using it on your lap or a hard surface ( table)? I just got a MacBook on Sunday also and if I use it on my lap the bottom left where the processor is, heats up very quickly and becomes quite hot. However if I use it on a hard surface it is absolutely fine.

if you have it for just a few days only, the system might still be indexing; and the time machine app could take up some resources if it is backing up.

time machine wasn't on, and i had it on a hard surface. The guy at the store said to come exchange it, but it looks like i may need windows for some applications needed for school. I preferred OSX, but i don't want to dual boot or use wine. I guess my next notebook will have to be a Mac and i'll buy an eeepc + a desktop for now.
