The ' key (the one to the left of the return button) doesn't work very consistently unless I press it really hard. I think this may be because there's something underneith the key.

What's the safest and easiest way to remove the key and clean it out? Or is this not a good idea (Or not even possible)? I would really like to know because as a student I do a lot of essays and I need that button to work a lot.

    Thanks in advance.

Used to be te keys were just snap-ons, but I think many today are not. I would first try taking a can of air to it. Also, check out google and see if there is anyone who has tried to take keys off. Good luck.

iFixit has a guide on opening your Macbook. If there is something beneath the key, you'll be able to take it out. It isn't really difficult but you must pay attention to some cables that may break easily. I assume that will void your warranty as well.
