That won't mean anything about getting a Windows interface right? If MAC switches to Windows operating system, I'd get one in a heartbeat. Unfortunately, I'm Apple illiterate.

You do realize that you can install windows on the mac when they switch to intel processors, you can't just install mac os x on windows machines.

Not true. You can't just go in there with a PowerBook and install Windows XP, becasue Macs have the PowerPC G4 as their processor, which are designed only to run on a 64-bit level, because Mac OS X is already on a 64-bit platform. Since Windows XP is based on a 32-bit computing level, I don't think they would be compatible, and the new "Yonah" chip by Intel will probably be designed to handle 64-bit programs and apps. However, when Windows Longhorn comes out, then there might be a very slight possibility that you can swich your OS over.

Ever heard of WinXP64? But the real reason is that the G4 are not x86 based. I am not a 100% sure but I think the G4 are 32 bit and the G5s are 64 bit.

Also, he is right. If you look carefully, he said when they switch over to the Intel chips which use the x86 architecture.

I did actually mean when the apple start shipping powerbooks with intel processors, when an intel processor is within the powerbook then windows xp can be installed.

So it is confirmed that you'll be able to install Windows on a Mac?? Its not fair though, they can install Windows, but us PC users can't install Mac OS X. Not fair!!

Supposedly when the Intel Macs come out you'll be able to install Windows on a Mac. Mac is supossed to locking people out of installing Mac on a PC, but I wouldn't be suprised if someone finds a way around it.

Why is Apple switching to intel anyway? It seems more like it would prevent apple freaks from buying the intel based system. But then again I don't know much about apple computers.

I'm in the process of converting my I9300 into a OSx86 machine. :D You shouldn't be surprised because someone has *already* found a way around it... haha I'm trying to do it w/o VMWare... will be interesting...

I'd think that Apple will eventually be a software-only entity, which only makes sense imo... As their hardware will no longer be very distinguishable, and they can make FAR more money by being a first-tier software company, than a hardware company that managed to capture 3% of the market in the past 20+ years.

    cheers,

    It's relevant to the thread:
"Thinking about Apple's Rosetta in light of Transmeta"
    http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20050810-5195.html

Can someone explain if much talked about Vanderpool technology (see e.g. http://www.dvhardware.net/article3998.html) supposingly to be implemented on Yonahs can be considered as an alternative to Rosetta way of running
    MAC software on Intel chips?

@yassarian, I read it in the news, but I was not able to find the french link. Could you please drop me more info/links on what you've just mentioned?

Or, maybe you just mean that: http://www.osx86project.org/ ?

As this is obviously *not* endorsed by Apple or anyone else, mods feel free to remove the link at your discretion. :D

The x86 mod was first accomplished by the same guy who haxed the xBox to run Linux... lol

Here's his blog page, containing a pretty detailed explination on how it can be done. Keep in mind, that this guild does NOT contain any source as to where one might be able to obtain an osX license... so... ur on your own on that, remember that whatever version you get, will most certainly be an illegal version... lol

Umm... wtf? You asked me where I got my sources, I linked it, but gave a disclaimer that since this is essentially illegal, the mods of the Apple forum might want to remove it due to potential legal issues. Now you flame me for posting what you asked for in the first place?

Somebody obviously woke up on the wrong side of his bed...

FYI I don't give a crap of your "german" media sources, I was merely trying to duplicate the said-individual's accomplishment. If that's a sign of condemning "free speech" or my "totalitarian instincts" -- you need to get your stupid head examined... -_-

Why do you talk as if you have a chip on your shoulder and a stick up your ass? 2nd warning.

    cheers,

yass, thanks for your post with the link. I deleted the previous comment which has provoked you. I just (probably) wrongly interpreted your comment about Apple endorsement as an unfriendly attempt of linking me to any legal abuse.

I also think you could express yourself friendlier than below:

lol sorry about all the questions at the Apple forums. Last question today -- I promise. :)

Apart from the potential substantial better overall CPU performance, what's so important about the switch to Intel? Any possibilities of running WinXP with a mac powered by an Intel CPU?

We don't know for sure yet, we are waiting for a intel powered apple notebook to come out and for someone to try dual booting. But it could very well be possible. If it is possible, i will be getting a powerbook for sure.

If the dual core yonah processors will be used and the vanderpool virtualisation technology will be implemented then there is a possibility that two OSs will be able to run at the same time and the dual booting will become history.
