My ancient Latitude D610 has finally collapsed, and I've decided to take the leap to Mac, but a few things still worry me. I'm an occasional gamer, nothing too serious, so as long as I can play the new StarCraft2 I'll be happy with any type of gaming performance. Aside from games, will I really notice the 2.2/2.4GHz and 128/256VRAM difference? I would imagine little performance decreases within OSX and normal business-type functionality, but my insecurity at purchasing an ~1800 laptop would really appreciate some reassurance from the fleet of notebook experts here at NBR. Still, the MBP's sexy alumninum calls to me, as does the opportunity to learn/use OSX...
I plan on using my new MBP for grad school classwork, typical internet browsing, and occasional light gaming. I'm doing the right thing by switching, aren't I? Right??

If you are only doing occasional gaming I see no reason not switch. All of the other things you described can be done in OS X.
The performance difference outside of 3D apps won't be too big. As for Starcraft 2 it is a long ways off, so who knows what the requirements are.
