The instructions didn't say to use a surge protector. I have the 3 prong in the wall and hooked up to the macbook. Does the power adapter have a surge protector built into it or something?

I don't believe it has a surge protector built in. It's a good idea to plug the MacBook into a surge protector when possible.

I was pretty sure I should think about getting one.

Yeah, very few electornics have surge protection built in. Amps and sub woofers are about the only ones I know of.

General rule of thumb, have EVERYTHING pugged into a surge protector. Period. Nothing gets plugged in my house unless it's on a surge protector or will only be connected while I'm using it.
