I bought the 2.4 Ghz/256 MB 8600m GT MBP yesterday, and so far it's even faster than I expected.
I use Windows XP, and I got 3700+ in the standard (1280x1024) 3DMark 06 test.
But what really made my day was the benchmarks in Supreme Commander. Since the game is really demanding on both CPU and GPU I was hoping to see some nice improvements over my "old" Asus W1Jc (2.0 Ghz Core Duo/1024 MB RAM/X1600 256 MB).

I ran the built-in benchmark with all graphic-options set to high (except shadow fidelity to medium), no AA and with 1280x1024 resolution, on both the W1Jc and the MBP.
On the Asus W1Jc I got an average FPS of 7.9.
The MBP ran the benchmark with an average of 15.9 FPS, more than (just! :p ) twice as fast!
What's more important for gameplay though, is the difference in mininmum framerates between the machines.
The W1Jc had a minium framerate of 1,7 FPS.
The MBPa minimum framerate was more than 4 times as fast as the W1Jc, 7.8 FPS.
The result is a way better gameplay experience on the MBP.

It might look like a low average framerate on the MBP, but the benchmarks are extremely demanding with lots, and I mean LOTS of things happening at once. I run the game with the same graphic setting but the a resolution of 1280x900 (to get the right aspect ratio), and it runs really nice and smooth.
On the W1Jc I used medium to low graphic settings and a resolution of 1024x768, and it wasn't nearly as smooth as with the MBP.

I intend to review both the W1Jc and the MBP soon, with some more gameplay comparisons with the W1Jc. Cheers!

Very cool; frankly, I have trouble running SupCom on my desktop machine (athlon 64 3400+, AGP 6800GT), so it's nice to hear it runs well on the MBP.

Yeah, since the game is extremely CPU demanding as well as GPU, I can imagine that your desktop is having trouble since it's single core.
I had a desktop with a P4 3,0 Ghz and a 6800GT card before my W1Jc, and the 3DMark benchmarks with that rig was almost identical with my W1Jc laptop, so the 6800GT isn't quite the beast it once was. :)

I was going to see how this ran on a 128mb 2.2Ghz MBP so I downloaded the demo. Is there anyway to have a video stress test?

MCPonken, thank you!!!! I have been trying to find someone who has a new MBP and Supreme Commander to see how it runs. I am glad it runs so well as I am used to a E6600 and a 8800GTX when playing, I know I won't be able to have super graphics etc on the MBP but medium settings would be fine.

I have just a few questions if you don't mind:

    1. Is this on a 15" or 17" MBP?

    2. What graphics detail setting did you have on SC?

    3. Do you play online with SC how is gameplay then?

    4. And lastly if you are using the 15" is the screen big enough in your opinion? Reason I ask is I am torn between getting a 15" or the bigger 17".

    Thanks

    1. It's the 15" MBP
    2. Like I wrote in the first post, high settings on everything except shadow fidelity which was medium, no AA
    3. Haven't tried online with the MBP yet
    4. Yeah, I think the 15" screen is big enough. Since I won't be able to run the game with a higher resolution anyway, the 15" screen is very nice

    It's no 8800GTX, but it's a big improvement over the X1600 I used before.
The W1Js felt a bit underpowered for SC, but the MBP handles it nicely.

It seemed to work just fine on my 2.2 128, however I don't play the game, I turned everything to high and I didn't see any skipping or anything. It was just the demo version and since I didn't know how to play I just walked around until I got tired.
