Okay, the rebate for univ students on the ipods does not apply to the new ipods.
Just thought I'd let ya'll know.

Go figure.
-
It appears that Apple might have done away with student discounts on iPods in general (the new iPods are full price on the educational store).
I can't say this bugs me too much, as the discounts were always kind of small anyway ($20 essentially).]
-Zadillo -
well but the new shuffle is around $80 for 1GB so
it seems ok.
i still wish to see some discount though. -
The discounts are in percentages, he just named an example figure of 20 USD since that's around what you'd get for a normal Nano. For a Shuffle it will be less. I think student discount is 10%, and I haven't heard anything about Apple getting rid of that - so don't get too worried.
-
I heard some more about this about why they got rid of the educational discount; apparently it mainly was primarily because the prices overall have been lowered across the board, so the educational discount wasn't really practical any more.
Starlight; at least for right now, this basically is the deal. There are no more educational discounts on any iPods (I don't remember if the Shuffle ever had a discount at all; if it did, it would have been small).

That really sucks -
Demand is high for new iPods. Perhaps after six months or one year, after the enthusiam of the release wears out, they might bring the discounts back. Also, if MS Zune manages to take a sizeable chunk of iPod's market, they might bring back the discounts or some other form of promotion.
-
Again, I'm not sure that this sucks that much. Apple dropped the prices across the board with the regular iPods ($249 and $349 instead of $299 and $399), and the capacities of the Nanos were doubled while keeping the same price point. I'll take lower prices overall over the student discount that usually amounted to no more than $20-30 anyway..... I think the most significant discount was $40 when the 60 gig was $399.
So I mean, before with a student discount you could get a 60 gig iPod Video for $369. Now you (or anyone) can get an 80GB model for $350. I don't see this as a bad tradeoff.
And again, even without a discount, the Nanos have doubled capacity, so if you had originally planned on buying a 4GB iPod Nano for $229 after the student discount, you can now get a 4GB iPod Nano for $199, or pay $20 and get an 8GB model.

I was actually refering to the rebate (the $170 back on purchase of computer & ipod)... but yeah, the normal % off is gone too. Oh well, sold the free ipod to a friend and will buy a new one.
-
well as we are talking about ipods, i might as well ask here.
im looking into the shuffle, and they say it will be available some time
in october. do you guys know/think when that might be?
- early october or more to late october? -
Pretty tough to say, Apple wasn't really specific about it. If I had to guess I'd say they probably would be available earlier in October, but I don't have anything to back that up.
-
My friend ordered his macbook, a shuffle and a mini on tuesday. Ship date for the shuffle is the end of sept.
Odd though that apple's store says ships in 24 hours. -
-
Nah, he ordred the new one. I guess when I was looking at it, it was before they had sold out of them. But yeah, his is shipping at the end of the month. He ordered right after the initial sell out of the new shuffle.
_edit_
or maybe i had been looking at the shipping times for the nano -
Yeah, it's not an issue that the new Shuffle has sold out; it just won't actually be available for sale to anyone until October.
-
Ah sorry, his ship date is the end of oct.
-
To be honest the price of those Shuffles makes me want one and the size too, I'm not an avid music listener so 1GB is fine for me, but still that thing is so SMALL!
-
I would probably loose the shuffle. Or forget it was clipped to my pants and throw it in the laundry. But yeah, pretty decent little thing though.
-
i don't understand why it is not ready while other ipod models are available. -
