I'm very interested in getting a 15" MBP, but storage is a slight problem. I'd like to have a 5.4k 250GB drive [WD Scorpio?], but this is not offered by apple.

Does anyone know if Apple will upgrade the MBP with a drive I provide to them? If so, how much would this cost?

I'm confident that I am technically able to install the drive myself, as I have disassembled and reassembled several laptops in the past. I suppose what I could do, to avoid putting my warranty in jeopardy, is keep the stock hard drive, and should I ever need to take my system in for maintenance, is just install the stock drive.

short answer: probably not. if they do, alot.

don't think changing the hd voids warranty, but don't quote me on that.

since you want a 5400 rpm drive, bandwidth evidently isn't the issue. why won't you consider an external drive?

Why not by an external firewire drive? I have a 320gb WD My Book Premium and it works great, plus I don't have to switch anything out.

OH trust me, I'll have external storage. Probably some sort of raid5 array with 1-2TB of space.

BUT, I need a good bit of local storage for when I'm traveling light. Basically, I don't want to deal with external storage when I'm out and about.

It will on the Macbook Pro's, but not on the standard Macbook.

it "might" be possible for someone at the Apple Store to swap the HDD for you, really just depends on the employees at the store though, it would help if you knew one of them as well, but you will jus thave to check and see for yourself
