I think this happens with XP as well?

    Anyhow...

    1. Is it legal to run XP or Vista in BOTH Fusion and Boot Camp environments? It's a single full retail version installation, just accessed two different ways.

    2. If it is legal, is there a solution the nonstop activation?

Basically, an activation will hold, until you boot the OS using the other environment. It's a viscous cycle of re-activating.

    1. Yes it's legal, as it's technically one install, you're just accessing it in two different ways.

    2. Not that I've found. It's intermittent for me. I can go a month without having to activate, and then I'll get a flurry of activations. It really can get annoying.

edit: I just realized I haven't had to activate in quite a while and it may be due to something I've had to do due to parallels having messed up my install. When you boot into Windows hold f8 like you're going to boot into safe mode, but just choose to start Windows normally. I've been doing this for ~3 months now and haven't had to activate since.

As I recall, you need either Windows Vista Business or Ultimate in order to run Parallels/Fusion. Neither Basic nor Home Premium run with it.

you could always do it. technically, it was against the eula to run vista home or home premium in the virtual machine, but everyone assumed you could and no one noticed that you weren't allowed to until they changed their policy, allowing you to. woo hoo, right?

xp pro is also allowed to run in the virtual machine. if you call up microsoft and explain your situation, they MIGHT give you another key.

    I'm still having the issue.

I was only using Boot Camp for a while, but today, I wanted to use Fusion, and I was prompted activate.

I activated and it was successful, but, I will boot using Boot Camp soon, and I will have to activate. Sigh.

So far I've activated maybe 6 times in each environment. I can't believe it's still activating successfully.

The problem is well known you have to take a look at the Fusion Forum. The problem solution is as follows.

Install Vista into bootcamp, do not activate. Install fusion and access to vista, install VMWARE tools and them activate vista. If not you will have the same problem forever.

In any case if you change the ram or other parameters inside FUSION Vista will ask for reactivation.

    Regards

Yeah, Crypt pretty much explained it... The big issue is that Vista thinks you are running it on two different computers due to the hardware change.

Not sure if it was parallels or fusion that did this... but I actually had two different hardware profiles in my XP install under bootcamp. One was for the VM and the other bootcamp.

I hope crypts solution works though.

Thanks for the info though. I was looking in a Vista forum and got no help, I don't know why I didn't try the Fusion forums.

Do I need to re-install Vista at this point?

I don't mind if that's what I have to do.
