I have no idea what's going on here, but ever since I installed the boot camp beta last week there's no startup sound anymore.

It made the startup sound once, and that's it. Now it doesn't do it anymore, all other sounds work just fine ... and no I don't have mute on.

Should I be worried? I know that if my PC doesn't make a beep on startup there's issues, and I hope it's not the same for this Mac.

I know that you guys probably have disabled the thing somehow, but there's a feeling of security for me to hear that startup sound.

    Thanks for any help!!

The startup chime not working usually doesn't have any bearing on the existence of other issues or lack thereof, but I can symphatize with feeling more secure when it is there, for sure :)

I'd try resetting PRAM, that will often kick the startup chime out of hiding if it has decided to not chime.

    To reset PRAM:
    1) Turn off the computer.
    2) Turn on the computer, and immediately after hold down Command (the apple key) + Option (the alt key) + P + R. So Apple+Alt+P+R.
    3) Continue holding them down until it restarts, at this point you should hear the startup chime also.
    4) Let go of the keys and let it boot up normally.

The PRAM contains some hardware settings, resetting it won't hurt your data in any way and in general shouldn't affect anything negatively.

i think if you mute your osx, there will be no chime when you restart.

Also, are you booting into XP? I don't think you get the sound if you are. Not sure though.

    @ easyeye:
Yes, if it is muted it won't chime. But the original poster already said he did not have mute on.

    @ M@lew:
No, you still hear the chime nonetheless - the chime is in the hardware, not in OS X.
