I've been using Leopard since it came out, I guess you could say and I've already installed the 10.5.1 update, but I'm anxiously awaiting the 10.5.2 update and I hope they FINALLY fix the keyboard issues.

I'm really getting sick of having to double check my work because of a first letter that may be missed out. I can just imagine getting an Audit because a number is missing somewhere in TurboTax because I didn't catch it.

    eriously, what's the deal? *smirks*

I heard rumors that the 10.5.1 update was supposed to have corrected this, but it hasn't. At least for me. Are they even acknowledging this bug? I don't know about everyone else, but I think this is a serious bug that should have been corrected hours upon the first known case. Yet it's been months since the release and the bug is still present. *sighs*

    Venting helps, at least. *growls*

There was an update released after 10.5.1 that was supposed to fix the keyboard issue.

    <noparse>MacBook</noparse>, <noparse>MacBook</noparse> Pro Software Update 1.1
You can check to see what updates are installed in System Preferences > Software Update > Installed Updates.

i have never understood this "bug".

so every word that you type is missing its first letter? or on occasion you are missing the first letter of a word? but all the keys on the keyboard are functioning fine? is that a bug?

you have to understand that while it may seem like "everyone" his having the issue, it is usually a very small percentage, easily less than 5% of users.

The missing first letter thing is a bug.

    10.5.1 did not fix it.

Software Update 1.1 did not fix it.

    I'd say it's more common than 5%.

    It's very annoying.

    Yes, I have the bug.

Yep it's an OS X bug, and not a hardware issue. It happens on occasion, and is slightly annoying since you never really know when it's going to strike. At first I thought it was a hardware issue, but it has never happened to me while typing on Vista. I really hope they fix this in the next update, it's just odd that they would leave something like this unchecked for so long.

it is just hard to call it a bug when it doesn't effect all systems, what am I doing correctly do have never had this happen if this is such a common bug?

i can almost promise you that every issue people post on forums, is a bug that is only affecting a small percentage of users and the reasons are usually unknown or software related. when everyone has the issue under the same circumstances, that is a major bug, like the quicktime 7.4 after effects issue, everyone can replicated it.

the issue Apple fixed with their keyboard was a bug, but I wish Apple would explain why certain computers were effected and some not at all. same with this missing first letter issue.

i guess what I am saying is, if it is something that can very easily be replicated, just take it into the store, there is obviously an extremely large group of users with no keyboard issues ever, so unless you are running some very obscure software, and you have tried a reformat with no results, i don't see why they wouldn't replace the keyboard for you.

also, keep in mind that just because all these people are complaining about an issue in a forum etc. etc. that Apple will be aware of it, the best way to let them know about something is sending a detailed bit of feedback to them, making sure to give as many details as possible. so before you vent make sure to also visit www.apple.com/feedback

    My installed updates:

I have no idea if the bug is present in Windows XP using either Boot Camp or Parallels.

It's not the first letter of every word that is missing, it's just the first letter after you start typing. My screen saver is set at 5 minutes, and display is turned off after 10 minutes of inactivity. The display automatically dims after a certain amount of inactivity and when that happens the keyboard back lighting will turn off. However, I don't think that's a problem, as the bug will happen multiple times.

Like right now, I could open a new tab in Firefox, than click the "search" box and type in "hunderbolt Siren" with Wikipedia's search plugin. Only to get a broken page because the first letter is missing. "Thunderbolt Siren" is what I wanted.

I was venting earlier, but even now it really upsets me that this bug hasn't been fixed.

I can't help but feel a little disappointed with Apple since everyone upheld it's security, stability, and their quality care. I guess maybe I came into the Mac world at a bad time, since this last year Apple has cared more about their iPhone, iPod Touch, and now the MacBook Air. Is Apple biting too much out of their apple than they can chew? *whimpers*

I don't want to go back to Tiger, so I guess I'll just endure these bugs. So help me though, I better not hear anyone brag about how Leopard just works in comparison to Windows Vista. *shrugs*

There was an update after 10.5.1 which fixed the keyboard issue. I had the keyboard issue myself and ever since that update no problems with the keyboard whatsoever.
If I remember correctly the update was a small one about 768 kb and it specifically said the problem which was keyboard blah blah. Well anyways do another software update to see if you still need updates maybe it just didnt show it. My mac was doing that sometimes before the 10.5.1 update.
    Hope it works out
    EDIT:
    It should be called the
    MacBook MacBook Pro Software Update
and if you have that installed that problem should not be affecting you. If it is take it to apple store or call the support line.

I think it is a software issue too.
I have updated, but my keyboard freezes sometimes--curiously, I can "reinitialize" it by plugging and unplugging in a USB keyboard.

I check for updates daily, and so far I'm still up-to-date. Hopefully 10.5.2 will fix this bug. *whimpers*

I have it on my macbook running 10.5.1. It is VERY annoying. Glad to know I'm not the only one with this problem.

It has wasted a lot of my time, having to go back very often to change things.

I'm ringing Apple tomorrow, see if I can get my MacBook replaced. It's just far too loud, far too hot, and far too unstable.

They made me pay a restocking fee even thou I told them there is no fix for it.
If your product has an issue I shouldn't have to pay a 200.00 restocking fee.
And on Apple's forums a developer said there is no fix for it in 10.5.2 so good luck with that.

Mine does it when I'm switching windows from instant messengers, office, and firefox.

In fact it did it when I started typing in this box.

    I have the same issue.
Anytime I first type into a new box the first letter does not get registered.
It is separate issue from the 1 minute key board freeze.
It happens on my USB keyboard as well as the laptop keyboard.
So it is not a hardware issue.
Why is this happening, and it would seem easy enough to fix.
