I noticed that although the aluminum body on macs are really strong, it seems like it would scratch very easily. I'm currently looking into getting a hard shell case for my Macbook Air from Speck. They're 50 dollars so I want to know if they're completely worth it. I know it will probably add a little more bulk and weight, but for anyone who has a speck shell case for any macbook, does it fit perfectly? is it tacky? or should I just purchase a clear-coat film for 25 bucks? Thanks.

I've had a Speck case on a previous 17" MBP that I owned (non unibody), and have one currently on my 13". The fit on both was perfect, but it does ad some weight. I got the satin soft touch in black for mine, and I love it. It protects well, and will show some fingerprints from time to time, but I'd rather deal with that than have dents or dings in my machine. Check Amazon for them

Personally, I would not get one and instead focus on buying a really nice sleeve. I had a friend who put a hard shell case on their 15" MBP and it has scratches on it from where dust came in-between the case and the aluminum of the MBP. The scratches were mainly around the edges at certain points of the case but they were still there. I too had one on my 13" MBP for about a week when scratches formed in the center of my MBP. I guess some dirt/dust got in-between the shell and my system without me seeing. I have since taken it off and I even returned the shell for a refund.

Instead, if you are worried about bumps and scratches, I think you would be better off buying a thick protective sleeve and then maybe a clear/design skin to place over the MBA. The skin would protect from scratches while you are using it and the sleeve would protect from scratches along with any bumps/drops while you are carrying it.

I liked mine, it saved my Macbook from dents and scratches several times.

I think I paid around $40 for mine.

i love my spec case. i have the satin black and it has a nice rubber like texture that gives a better grip while carrying. I have had them on all my macs and ive been able to resell all my macs without dents because of it. i also noticed a deep scratch on the speck case a couple weeks ago. no idea where it came from but had i not have the speck case on that would have been a gouge in my laptop. its saved me so many times.

I've got the same one (black satin finish) on my early 2011 15" MBP.
The fit is great and not tacky at all.
I had a 2008 Black Macbook before and it's a similar finish to that and does make it easier to carry around.

I picked up the clear Speck hard case for my 15" MBP. It's worth the investment to me but I suppose its really a matter of personal preference whether you get one or not. The case is a good fit and takes all the scuffs and scratches. I bought mine on Amazon btw.

I also invested in the Moshi clear keyboard cover, wrist and trackpad guards.

It all keeps my MBP looking like new even though its a 2009.

I guess it depends on how you use your Mac. Mine remains in the sleeve unless I am using it like right now. I haven't had any problems, except a small dent in the left corner of the lcd paneling when I bumped it into the concrete driveway.

I bought a late 2008 MacBook a few months ago. The original owner sold it to me with a speck hard case. The laptop had a single small scratch, the rest was absolutely flawless and like new. So it definitely works.

However, I sold it cuz I am more of a sleeve guy. Plus having that case on probably doesnt help with cooling if you are running some heavy stuff on it.

    Still, I would recommend it.
