How can I use speakable items to open apps of my choice? Like "Open Itunes" to open itunes, etc. Is this possible?

Speak itens is not voice recognition... AFAIK OS X can't do that.

i think you are getting speakable items and text to speech confused.

its cool being able to give the mac commands verbally, although it can be touchy in a noisy environment.

It opens any applications, just say: "open iTunes dot app"

Not confused, I simply didn't know OS X had built in speech recognition! Well, now that I come to think about, guess I already came by it in Sysprefs but never paid attention.
Curiously, can't get it to work. I calibrate the microphone and it recognizes the test phrases fine, but if I try any actual commands it fails. The Speech Commands Window is empty, is that how it is supposed to be?

by default you have to press and hold escape for it to 'listen' for voice commands.

No, it wasn't that. The commands were being "heard" but not recognized... I guess it had something to do with locale prefs, since in another account it worked fine.

Now, while the speech rec. isn't that accurate, and it is probable impractical or cheesy as someone say to use constantly, it made me feel like... wow. I wonder, is anyone here old (and geeky) enough to remember that scene from Star Trek (movie) IV, when Scotty would ask the computer to calculate a certain chemical compound... having come from the future, where voice interfaces were the norm, he would say "Computer, calculate (whatever)" and look puzzled when the computer wouldn't respond. Then someone told him to just use the mouse... he grinned and held the mouse as a microfone and called joyfully: "Computerrrr!" lol! I felt just like him yesterday yelling at the macbook trying to get it to recognize some voice input. BTW, the computer in that scene was a Mac, I guess the original 128k model. ;) :D

I totally remember that. That was hilarious. "Hello, computer..." Bones was just standing there smiling like it was all the norm. lol

Of course, then he started typing 100wpm, but yeah...
