    2.4GHz MBP, Vista Ultimate 32bit

    1. Make sure no external speakers/headphones are plugged in
    2. Mute sound in Vista
    3. Turn off and restart
    4. Unmute sound - you still won't hear anything until you restart (unmuted).
    * If you plug an external speaker in with a muted restart though, sound still comes through external speakers.

Drivers still seem to be there with no warnings, etc., seems to be using correct output.

Any ideas? I want to get my sound back after such a muted restart without doing another restart.

Yeah I've had this issue a couple of times. It's because the Macbook Pro features a digital out jack.

Did you notice every time you plug something in, the Realtek drivers spot it and let you know with a bubble? (in Windows) Well, that whole detection is flawed.

All you need to do is plug in a pair of headphones, let it stay for like 10 seconds, and then take them out. The sound will magically reappear.

That's how it went for me. Let me know if that helps...

You don't even need actual headphones. Just the jack itself, so you can plug it in...

Boot into OSX and use a Virtual machine for the time being?

Well no, you don't have to go that far...

If nothing works, you can always reinstall the audio driver..
