as you all know, windows 7 will be released in 10 days...which version will you purchase? i'm still debating between home premium and professional...i dont know if professional will run hotter than home premium...that's what's holding me atm...

I have a fully working version of Vista64... the little I use Windows it runs fine, i see no reason to even buy Win7.

But I seriously doubt you'll have a temperature difference between home premium and pro.

Are you already using Vista? If you are, then I agree with the above poster about not bothering with it, at least not yet. Assuming Vista is working for you. :)

Ooo ok! Well the RC or RTM versions are good for quite a while anyway, you can just keep using that if you want, to see if W7 has any problems. But since you didn't buy Vista, perhaps it wouldn't be a bad idea. :)

I have a copy of Windows 7 Ultimate and it is really nice. Its on the mac but I just havent got ot use it yet. It is the full release client as I won the house party contest and I am an official host. It installed easily and runs pretty smooth.

I got windows server 2008 r2 for free. Any student can do this through dreamspark.com

it has all the features of windows 7 ultimate and some others as well. It does require some work to get it operational as basically nothing is installed by default.

    Google: windows server 2008 workstation

I'd be very hesitant to buy one of these as I'm sure they're illegal in the sense that most likely these are keys generated from a TechNet or an MSDN subscription. The users involved in selling these keys are going against the EULA and as such there will be no warranties at all with them. So if the key stops working or for whatever reason you needed to contact MSFT for re-activation, you'll be SOL.

As to your original question, there's a good edition comparison of windows 7 on Paul Thurott's site. Frankly, if I didn't have a TechNet subscription (which entitles me to using Ultimate and/or Professional at no additional cost) I'd stick to Home Premium. Windows 7 Home Premium has quite a few additions that bridge the gap between HP and Ultimate back from the Vista days. And I don't think there will be any noticeable performance difference between the two although I could be wrong.

thanks for your input...that's what i've been thinking. I would rather get the home premium over the pro...i don't require the additional features of the pro...
