Right now I have a 4 month old MB 13" with Leopard.
Say I upgrade to Snow Leopard on Friday......
If I have a subsequent failure, or just want to upgrade my HDD that then requires me to restore my drive from scratch (with a good recent Time Machine backup avaialble), what process would I follow?
1) Install Leopard from my original disk, then upgrade to Snow Leopard, then use the time machine backup to restore?
-or-
2) Install Snow Leopard straight from the upgrade disk (if it even possible), then use the Time machine backup to restore?
I guess I am asking whether the "Upgrade Disk" a full install disk, or is it just for an incremental upgrade?. Do I even need my old Leopard disk anymore?

Good question. I don't think anyone would definitively know this until we start getting our hands on SL UpToDate disk.
Going from past experience though, I was able to use my Leopard UTD disk to clean install over Tiger. The disk gave me both options so in that sense it was equivalent to the full disk.
I'm hoping it's the same this time around with SL. And if it is then both options will be available to you. -
I'm going to upgrade my HDD on friday when I get SL. Could I use Time Machine to directly backup my data to the new drive connected to a USB enclosure? Really hope so...

It copies your MBP's hdd exactly onto your new hdd. -
edit: and I assume it will clone the Boot Camp partition as well? -
correct. You can do the SL upgrade before or after the carbon copy.
It should copy the boot camp partition too, but I haven't done that myself. In any case if it doesn't work, you'll still have the old drive. -
supposedly they have put in a way with the upgrade disc to be able to install it from scratch without leopard already installed.... the exact methodology on how they do this I haven't found anywhere.... but i doubt they'd make you do a 10.5 install then upgrade it... just to do a 10.6 install.
My 10.5 is so screwy cuz I use it more like a Linux machine and play with everything, its time for me to reinstall anyways... so hoping to do that Friday to 10.6, and not just do an upgrade.
Snow Leopard upgrade with Time Machine
