My dad just bought the upgrade to Snow Leopard as a Family Pack. I'm currently away from home (overseas) for the next 3 months. Do you guys know if there is a way for me to upgrade my OS using my dad's license while away from home? (preferably without needing him to physically mail me the CD) Thanks in advance :)

well the license does cover the same household, so if your living with your parents normally, it should cover your machine.... you should be able to get any copy of Snow Leopard you want and install it, as your license is already covered.

If you can't get your hands on an actual disc to do the installation, the only remaining way is probably to Torrent it, and doing that with an operating system is a fool's errand.

The "license" is essentially the original box with the serial # on it - Snow doesn't check or ask in any way for identifier info from either the DVD or box during the install. Unlike a certain Washington State-based company, Apple relies on the honor system among its user base for OS installs/upgrades.

You own a Mac, so you may just be talking sarcasm, but OS X has never had copy protection or had any mechanism to prevent installation on multiple machines. It really is honor based. That said, when you buy that 15.4" Macbook Pro, Apple has made the money they wanted to make off you, even more if you opt for the AppleCare and maybe a subscription to MobileMe and hey don't forget to check out iTunes. Did you want to get an iPod too? Buy a Mac and get a free Touch! Check out all those apps at the App Store!

Still, legal purchase of software is the safer and more morally-compatible thing to do. I got Snow Leopard at Fry's for a whopping $28.
