More often then in windows a single program can take down the OS X OS then in windows. A single program such as skype crashing stops everything. The program is highlighted, but it could just beach ball or do something else such as only give you a mouse cursor.

Is there no way in OS 10.4 or 10.5 to close it with a keyboard command or bring up activity monitor to close it from there?

I'm talking about the locks where you can't choose items in the dock or anything that would be a full screen application.

I mainly work on windows machines but use 10.5 as a personal computer.

Command + Q, if you mean that.

But if you mean something like Ctrl + Alt + Delete on Windows, then its Command + Option + Esc.

Awesome! Thank you Sam so much.

That is exactly what I was looking for. It stays on top as well. I was just using the power button and I hate using that option.

-Command-Option-Escape: Brings up the Force Quit menu

-Hold Command-Option-Shift-Escape for 3-4 seconds: Force Quits automatically the application on the front. (Be careful not to quit anything else!)

-On the Dock: Hold Option and Right-Click on the icon for the stalled program; you'll have "Force Quit" among the options.

-Run an instance of the "Activity Monitor" in the background; this can kill off programs not responding.

-When Finder starts acting weird, hold Option and THEN Right-Click: You'll have the option to Relaunch, on the menu.

Could you please explain how this works in more detail?

Just keep Activity Monitor turned on. So, in your dock, there would be a circle under your Activity Monitor icon. You can then bring it up using Cmd+Tab or something if the dock is not responding.
