Is there a freeware program for making the bootcamp partition smaller?

Or can I use the bootcamp assistant w/o reinstalling windows?

iirc you can use disk utility and make the partition smaller. But not 100% sure about it.

    Just helping someone.

Thanks for the tip. I'm actually looking for something that can do it w/o optical drive.

    I guess Gparted will work.

It's actually platform independent. So no worriers there. You can boot it from a CD, Flash drive, or another hard-drive.

use Winclone to backup your bootcamp, but make sure you click "shrink this volume" in the menu.

Then you can delete bootcamp partition with assistant, remake smaller with assistant, and then restore with winclone.

It does all you need, in a nice interface no less. FOR FREE :)

Is the option you're talking about 'prepare for restoring on a different partition'?

Well it's for a friend and it needs to be really simple. Booting from CD or USB is too difficult.

Ideally it would be a program that can be installed in OS X and then shrinks the Bootcamp partition.

That sounds good. Will let him try that.

Have used the Winclone trick. Works great and no re Activation issues with Vista. I increased my Bootcamp partition and it worked great.
