I am getting my friend in DC to buy a 2.2 Ghz MBP with his educational discount and get it over to me in India. The problem is that he visited both the Apple Stores near his university and his home and the glossy screen version is out of stock in both of them. They say that glossy screen one will come maybe after Tuesday but there are no guarantees. Also, ordering online is not a option as he leaves on this Friday for India and i dont want to take a chance with delivery ( the mac store says 3-5 working days for shipping).

So, should i go in for the matte screen option ? I will be primariliy using this on my desk in my home and the uses will be gaming and watching movies.

well wait if you can, kind of surprising they don't have any in stock, but maybe they are selling fast, most apple stores have a massive stock.

if he has the chance to go to the store before he leaves after Tuesday, of course wait and see if it comes in stock, it should.

and couldn't you just wait until it comes in stock and have someone ship it too you? or are there high taxes etc? and no Apple stores or resellers in India?

30% customs duties if it is shipped to India :) And in India, there is no educational discount, and the prices are 40% over US thanks to customes duties. If you bring it is person though, no customs duties.

So i am mostly waiting till tuesday, if he gets the glossy fine. Otherwise Matte screen only.

ahh I see, that is what I figured, that is too bad about all the price hikes and duties, but that is how it goes.

good luck in getting the laptop you want!

I hope you get the glossy screen you want, but the matte's no slouch. Congrats, btw, on a great new machine.

I wouldnt mind the matte screen. sure the glossy screen has alittle bit more "wow" factor, but the matte screen, in my opinion, is much more practical. (i hate fingerprints on a glossy screen!)

I got the 2.2 ghz with the matte screen, I love it. Absolutely no glare, no fingerprints, colors are great (unless you really want the glossy for the saturated colors look, which I don't prefer). I wouldn't shy away from the matte if that's the only thing available. But of course, get what you want. :) Both are great screens!

The matte screen is great by the way...its about 95% as good as the glossy screen...I suppose the main disadvantage being you couldn't see someone sneaking up behind you...

I had a matte on my 2.33 Ghz MBP. Sold it and bought he glossy 2.4 Ghz. When it first booted up I was surprised by its brightness that made my daughter squint and go "WOW!"
It's a personal preference thing but as for me I would never go back to matte.
Odd thing is I had to go to three different stores to track one down. Each store said the next store had one and I was turned down at the third store but as I was walking away the guy asked me my name and realized one was reserved and set aside for me.

i wouldnt even say matte is 95% as good as glossy. they are both good for different things.

sitting inside watching movies on a desk. its pretty hard to suggest matte screen for that.

i personally got a glossy one.

if i was planning on being outside with the machine a lot, i might consider a matte. they are really just different. intense color vs accurate color. fingerprints and glare vs not.

I really like the glossy screen on my MacBook, but chose the matte on the new MacBook Pro. I do a lot of work with text on the MBP, and find the matte much easier on my eyes. The brightness of the LED display is very good, and I typically have it turned down some.
