Well, the macbook is also near its 14 day exchange period, and the other day i was using it to type some notes while doing some online readings. After 1 and half to 2 hours of usage, i notice the fan speed jumped all the way up to 4200-4300 rpm and the CPU temperature was up to 72 degrees [taken from iStat readings]. But before this i notice a noise [sounded like a fan, i wouldn't call it a loud whine tho] that was coming from what seem to be the center of the macbook from the beginning of my usage. Mind you, i have used my macbook for over 6 hours on the day i received it, and other times i use it for a good 2 hour+ and i have never experienced this issue. Should i be concern?

EDIT: during my usage, i was only using firefox and microsoft word. i don't believe it would be a problem with the memory since after all i have 4 GB of it, and have used Apple's Hardware disc to check the ram, but arguably during the first day that i received the macbook i have been using the default ram

Well, I think that something may block the vent of your macbook. Once I use my macbook pro on my bed, it whines because the vent is blocked by sheet. In my personal opinion, it is not a big deal. If you use it on the desk with nothing blocks the vent, and you just use firefox and some ordinary program, and it still whines, then there is a problem.
Hope that this can help you.

If I were you I would just return it while you still can and either get a new Macbook and let it run again to see if the same problem occurs, and if it does, consider purchasing a new notebook that has better construction.

I know a girl with a Black Macbook and this doesn't happen to hers, and it doesn't even have Santa Rosa.

Keep in mind, that Word will tax your system. It has to be run through Rossetta, which makes the app run slow and it also is fairly processor intensive.

But generally, you shouldn't have it getting that hot :-/

I am using my macbook pro all the time and I did not hear any noise, maybe it is better that you returned this macbook to the apple store and get a new one.

i ain't quite sure if this is gonna help, but the noise originates from the very left by the usb ports of my macbook, you really need to put your ear down to hear it. If someone can tell me they also some sort of noise this will really put me at ease. Otherwise, if this baby goes crazy again, i really might consider return it tomorrow.

If you have to strain so hard to hear it, it probably isn't a problem (or what's causing the problem). What were you doing with your ear next to the left USB port anyway?

well, i guess i am overreacting with the return/exchange period coming to end, i really wanted to make sure my macbook was in no way defective. on a side note, i didn't really thought of this as an issue until i brought this macbook into my bedroom where its dead silent compare to my computer room where all i can hear are pc fans. Now in dead silent situations, is it normal to be able to hear the fan which i conclude is the source of the noise that i hear.

This is normal for a Macbook -- no cause for concern. They do have weak cooling (I'd call it inadequate) and tend to run a little warm.
