I have a Macbook Pro (first generation with LCD screen). It has a 2.2ghz, 4mb L2 cache cpu and 128mb 8600gt. I can get the last non-unibody MBP for $1349 through my school. This computer has 2.5ghz, 6mb L2 cache and 512mb 8600gt. Would it be completely stupid to buy the new one? I may be able to sell the old MBP for $1000, so overall it's going to cost about $350 for the upgrade. What say you? The extent of my gameplaying will be WoW on a 1600x1200 monitor. will the extra 384mb of video memory make a difference?

Yes, it would be completely stupid. You should save the money to buy a unibody mbp. With the new old mbp you'll still be getting the 8600gt. 384mb isn't going to make much difference.

I wouldn't say it's stupid, but the value of the upgrade is not $350 in my opinion.

Thanks for the replies. I'll just stick with my current MBP. The Unibody MBP isn't selling for a discount and, even if it was, I wouldn't buy it. I purchased my MBP specifically for the matte screen. I had a PC with a glossy screen and I could not stand the fake looking colors that the glossy screen produced or the fact that it was completely useless when there was any source of light around. I hate hate HATE glossy laptop screens. =P

if you had the real original macbook pro (Core Duo, and ATI X1600) I'd say sure, go for it..but you have a Core 2 machine already with a 8600... heck no... don't upgrade unless is a unibody!

the 17" is an awesome machine.. though expensive. I myself LOVE the glossy screens (I actually find the colors more real and less fake...), but hopefully they'll take the idea of the Matte option they have on the 17"ers and make it available on the 15's and 13's for those people that actually want it.
