The Genuises suggested a #00 because the #1 is too big and the screws won't come out...I think they're stripped.

That's weird; makes me wonder if it's some sort of defect (like the wrong screws were used when your Mac was assembled or something)?

From most of the experiences I've heard that other people have had, the unscrewing is relatively painless and straightforward.

I'm still curious if you're able to at least loosen them enough for the L-bar to come off though (as the Apple PDF recommends, just loosening the screws as opposed to removing them entirely) and then tighten them again.

If not, I'd definitely see about getting them to replace it or something, since I haven't heard it being normal for it to be so difficult.

I can't even loosen them to the point where I can pull the L-Bar out. Too bad the genius bar at the local store is closed until Monday because it's tax free weekend and they have too much in-store traffic

Well I solved the problem...big **** up on the part of the screwdriver company Wiha (based in Germany). On the screwdriver they printed the proper #00 labeling but they inserted an incorrect head into the casing. I went back to the hardware store because I always thought that my screwdriver didn't look like a phillips and sure enough I found another screwdriver in the exact same packaging with the same specs printed on the driver but with the proper phillips head. I had no problem getting the screws out once I got the proper screwdriver.
