There have been a number of problems reported and Apple came out with a fix recently for the flicker issue. For those with 27 inch iMacs, has the update fixed the problems? I'm interested in getting one and was waiting for the bugs to be worked out.

Apple is apparently working on a fix. You can buy it because if something turns out wrong with it, you can ask for a compensation from Apple. They're giving ~$300 in compensation which is quite nice.

Thanks for the update. I'd rather have it working correctly out of the box instead of dealing with problems. I know that there was a long iMac thread from last fall but I couldn't find it. I'm just using my 17 inch MBP attached to a Samsung 24 inch monitor for now.

My pal just got one, no issues except the challenge of learning a new GUI (he is a very stubborn switcher) - which he'll master with abit more use.

15% off the total price if you decide to keep it and wait till Apple issues an official fix. 15%=~$300

I say go for it!! Apple will fix the issue, and you're getting the price lowered!

    > ones instore seem to be fine.

Well, there's a difference between looking at a computer in a store and using it for 8 hours a day for work.

I was about to say! why would anyone here recommend you buy a unit known to have problems?

Wait until they fix their issues and it's *confirmed*.

Jesus Christ. The advice some people open their damn mouth's up to give people here is ridiculous. I don't like calling people "stupid", but it's mighty stupid to recommend that anyone buy a piece of hardware that has a good chance of being broken out of the box or having problems. that's irresponsible. and that's almost everyone who's posted in here.

Some of you really need to reconsider your priorities and if giving hardware purchasing advice is for you. (hint: it's not if you're okay with telling a guy to buy a $1700 piece of hardware that has issues)

What are the requirements to getting that $300 price reduction? Would one have to send it in to Apple to get it repaired? Or would a simple complaint do?

These things come with return policies so the risk is zero.

    > so the risk is zero.

My time is valuable and $300 is a small amount of money for the aggravation of doing a return.

I bought it two days ago. It's sitting in the trunk of my car - I have to deliver it to my son's apartment and then get it set up. I think that I'm going to like it. It's going to replace my 17 inch MBP hooked up to a 24 inch Samsung monitor and it means that I won't have to hook up cables when I use it. Unfortunately my daughter is eying the thing.

There is no fix for the flickering display issue as of now.

If you do make sure all your system updates have been done and running the latest version of the OSX (10.6.2)

Your Also going to need to do the following..

    1) Verify the Display firmware and that its update to date
    - http://support.apple.com/kb/DL998

    2) Verify the iMac graphics card firmware is up to date as well.

Thats as far as its going to go.. I'm sure a fix will be released shortly.

We set it up yesterday - very clean - only four parts - system, keyboard, mouse, power cord. I got my work software installed and one of the kids installed her game software. I have to get a Windows 7 license (I think that Boot Camp supports Windows 7 now) as the kids want that OS available. We haven't had any problems so far and the machine is a pleasure to use.

The guy at the store told me that the iMac screen issues were on the i7 models. Perhaps there are chipset issues with the Nehalem models with i7s.
