Last night, in the midst of writing an essay with Safari on, my computer would literally freeze every minute. I quit all applications and my Macbook was back to normal but as soon as I re-opened Safari, my computer would freeze for a minute, regain composure for another minute, and repeat its cycle. It's driving me nuts!

I restarted it and even had it shut down for a couple of hours but I am still having the same problem.

I've had my Macbook for over a year and this has never happened.
I'm using Firefox right now. I'm on Tiger. Help.

I use FF 3 on OS X 10.5.4. I almost never use Safari. Safari is almost to OS X what IE is to Windows. I have even found that revoking Safari's place as the default browser can make things go less smoothly. Safari exploits are widely known albeit less numerous than IE exploits. For this reason, Safari remains my default browser but I never leave it running for more than a few minutes. FF3 OTOH can be left up for days or weeks at a time without incident. FF2 used to have memory leaks and had to be restarted more often. I'm fairly certain FF3 could run for many months with no problem.

Of course, if you have current Applecare, you can call Apple about this. If you force-quit Safari next time it is freezing, be sure to "send to Apple" when given the opportunity. You would do well to enter text comments letting them know it freezes once a minute. Since you are on Tiger, I suspect the energy they will devote to squashing this bug will be rather limited but if there is something a Safari update could do to fix it, I would not be surprised if it actually showed up in System Update one of these days.

Have you tried repairing Disk Permissions? It doesn't hurt. Otherwise, since Firefox is fine its obviously an isolated Safari issue. Try reinstalling Safari 3, see if that fixes it!

I read somewhere that I just had to remove all the saved passwords from the autofill forms because apparently, having too much saved fxcks up Safari... I removed some saved passwords and everything is back to normal.

Interesting, I haven't heard of that. But your problem's fixed, that's good. I'll keep that in mind if it ever happens to me!

But I'm on Firefox 3 at the moment. There's no real advantage for me to use Safari now, since my main issue with Firefox before was its UI in Tiger. Maybe the next version of Safari, with Snow Leopard.

I would stick with FF 3, great browser. FF and Opera are supposed to be the fastest anyway, while Safari is known as being the biggest memory hog.

Safari is faster in other areas though. Firefox 2 was quite a heavy memory hog too. I do like FF3.
