Just installed my Vertex 2 SSD 240GB.

Copied my SuperDuper image across fine.

However, when I switch my MBP on, it wont boot off of the internal SSD by default. It just sits at the initial white screen.

HOWEVER - if I switch on and press the option button, then select the internal SSD, it boots and runs fine - so the SSD is definitely there and bootable etc.

How can I make the internal SSD the main bootable drive, without me having to press the option key every time I want to boot?

well.. usually its best to not put a HDD image onto a SSD... it can lead to problems.. performance mainly...

but, have you tried just going into System Preferences under StartupDisk and selecting the SSD drive as the default startup disk?

Just tried that and it worked. Cheers.

Everything seems to be running well. The applications start up MUCH faster.
Photoshop CS4 took just under 11 seconds to start before, now it starts in 3 seconds.
Word 2008 took just under 10 secs before, now it starts in 2 secs!!

Only concern I have is the boot time. Its only taken a 5 or so seconds off of my stock 5400rpm drive - I was expecting much more. When I switch on it seems to sit and wait a few seconds before the round timer comes up and it actually starts loading.

Saying that the firmware of the drive is out of date, so I need to update that once I get hold of a Windows machine (only upgradable via Windows!). Im hoping that will make a difference.

My install with the HDD was pretty fresh - thats why I just cloned it across.
Would afresh install on the SSD really make a big difference?

    Thanks.

You should do a fresh install on the SSD for optimum performance.

I cannot say that it will make a difference but it always seems that initial problems many people experience seem to occur through ghosting or cloning and are always cured on a fresh install.

To me, it is the best thing you can do with respect to the ssd because it makes sure your system isn't slowed because of old installations and programs.

I bet you this though now thinking about it....your boot time will improve with the fresh install. How long is your boot right now?

My boot time at the moment is about 23 seconds from as soon as i press the power button until it gets to the desktop fully loaded....

    Is that good/bad?

Im happy with the performance otherwise. The drive stays cool, completely silent etc obviously, and applications launch in less then a quarter of the time they used to!

I would just try doing a clean install anyway. Since you already have the image of the old installation, you have nothing to lose except time :D.

+1. especially if you didn't have a lot of special configurations.

Ive used about 19GB on the system - just Snow Leopard and a few apps.
The largest apps being Office 2008 (without Entourage) and Photoshop CS4.

I may do a clean install and try it out. If no different I could still just stick the image back on I guess!
