I just downloaded SMCFanControl and it will not start.

I previously had Fan Control and I uninstalled it by following the instructions on the website. I did the SMC Reset as directed too. I'm not sure if it went through though because there is no indication.

    I have a UMBP 17".

If I can't get it to work I'll just use Fan Control.

    Thanks in advance!

no idea... never had a problem on my 15"er... what exactly does it do when you try to run it?

is there a new little icon in the top right bar that is it running?

You may want to uninstall and reinstall it again.

Are you referring for it to start when you boot up your computer? If so, you need to go to smcFancontrol's preferences, and check the "Autostart after login" and that will start it when you log in automatically. ;)
