So I installed SMC Fan control recently to save my future generations (I know its not the best idea to use it on your knees anyway, but it's practical for my use). Before I used SMC the fans on my mbp would idle at 2000rpm. To maintain a relatively cool temp (around 40C) my fans are set to run almost constantly at about 4000rpm (the lowest setting possible).

How much do you think this would harm the fans?

I don't think it would harm them considerably. I've ran at 3.5k rpm for quite a while now without any issues.
