Just downloaded this app to keep my RPMs on 6000 while playing games. However, when I put the speeds up and hit save, absolutley nothing happens! The Fans stay on default even though I put the minimum speed at 5000! What am I doing wrong?

click the smc fan control on the bar at the top of the screen, where the temp and rpm's are displayed.

    click preferences

    click on the "+" sign

type in the name of a "favorite" setting (I made 4 and named them 6k 5k 4k 3k) and set the fans to your desired level for each setting

once again, click the smc fan control on the bar at the top of the screen, where the temp and rpm's are displayed.

click on "active setting" and choose one.

    enjoy.

Thanks a lot! Works now. If there a chance having my fans going on high all the time may damage them though?

Not really. And a broken fan is much cheaper to replace than a warped screen or melted logic board. That said, I don't think you need them @ 5k all the time. Start from the minimum value until you reach a speed/temp level that works for you. On my MB, 3k is enough to keep the core between 45 and 53 degrees most of the time.

Well during normal use in OS X I use default fan settings. I just need them high because while playing games my 8600 can even reach the 90s, and it worries me, especially since I sometimes play for a few hours at a time. On default my GPU Diode idles in the low 60s with my CPU in the low 50s. Which only causes it to be a little warm. But when playing Gears it gets to the point where it's very uncomfortable to even touch the bottom or the area over the keyboard for more than 20 seconds. I doubt it will burn but it is very hot to the touch.

i guarantee you your computer is much better at managing its temps and knowing what is safe, i don't think you can really do any damage by having your fans on full tilt, but I don't really believe there will be that great of a benefit, because if any damage is caused by high temps, it will be very significant, and will probably require something to be completely replaced, and if something is going to overheat, having the fans at full tilt probably aren't going to stop it.
