    Hi all,

I've just installed SMC on my new MacBook Pro. Has anyone had any problem with this app? When you first run the app it shows the default fan rpm as 2000 rpm however within a few seconds automatically set the minimum speed to 4000 rpm. You then can't set a speed less that 4000 rpm. I've tried resetting the SMC but to no avail.

Am I missing something or has someone else had the problem too? The default should be 2000 rpm as it was on my previous MacBook.

    Cheers,

    CW

It might not support the new Santa Rosa Macbooks, yet. Can someone else with a Santa Rosa Macbook Pro confirm this?

I think the problem you may be having is an old version. I downloaded a different version two days ago, and it wouldn't even let me install it, as it said that my computer was not compatible. I downloaded version 2.1.2 last night and it works just fine. There is a "higher rpm" setting that i use when its plugged in that leaves 4000 as the minimum speed, and I created a custom battery setting that leaves it at around 2300. Here is a link to the new version.
    By the way, I have a 2.2 15" MBP.

I forgot to mention...without the fan control utility...after about 30 minutes of constant 80% cpu usage...it got fairly warm...the enclosure bottom temp got up to around 107F. It hovers around 95-100 while just surfing the internet ect...with smcfancontrol on around 3000 rpm...the temps drop to 85-95F (istat temps, by the way) although the difference between the actual feel of the bottom is huge. I would have no problem using this on my bare legs with the fans kicked up(the case is barely warm at all), except for gaming. Stock fan speeds, it gets a lot warmer on the bottom than the temperature difference would indicate. I wouldn't put it on a bare lap if i was doing anything remotely cpu intense. But this whole heat issue thing isn't as big of an issue as everyone is making it out to be. Hell, my dads two year old sony is almost as hot, and its twice as thick. And my girlfriends 6 year old dell is like a giant charcoal briquette by comparison. Granted, its somewhat annoying that I have to download a fan control utility...but for the effort, the difference is huge. I will hopefully get around to testing the difference in battery life at some point with the fans at different base speeds, in addition to a review of my new laptop. (Initial assessment- It's friggin sweet!) It's certainly an improvement over my 5 year old dell desktop. Ha.

    Yep

It could be ill effects from that firmware update and smcFanControl not being updated for it yet.

Except you're talking about a different model MBP and different firmware update. The most recent firmware updates did not include Santa Rosa MBPs. See Firmware updates available for Intel Macs for more information on that.

    pufftissue, try repairing disk permissions.

I've had similar issues with the fans on my iMac and a restart fixed the problem every time.

    Well guys,

    I have:
    1. Wiped out my entire hard drive and done a clean install of OS X 10.4
    2. Did not update a single software update.
    3. Installed smc fan control 2.1.2 and the stock fanspeed is STILL 4000 rpm.

I think it's the EFI firmware upgrade?

I don't know what could possibly be the problem. I even repaired disk permissions. No go.

THEN I found Fan Control 1.1 (different program)
    http://www.lobotomo.com/products/FanControl/

and while the program doesn't appear to do anything, I know for a fact that my fan is now back down to 2000 or less. The GUI part of it doesn't seem to show on the MBP but in the daemon it has been installed and the macbook pro is dead silent again.

Installing SMC Fan Control again still gives me a selectable default minimum fan speed of 4000 rpm, but the difference is that now my fans are actually running at 1741 rpm...So I have no idea what happened. It's like I fixed the problem without fixing anything.

If this would help anyone or if anyone can figure this out, let me know. I think that 2000 rpm minimum is fine and when it gets hot, I kick it up myself. It has to be the EFI firmware b/c the SMC FAQ says something that it always uses the minimum apple stock speed settings.

What speed where your fans running before you installed smcFanControl? (check it with iStat dashboard widget)

I have it on my MBP for about 2 months now with zero problems.
