Would it be possible to safely run a Macbook Pro without the battery module but still have it plugged in? I'm afraid that on the occasional session I need to run my computer for hours at a time, the heat generated will have a negative effect on the life span of the battery. Excessive heat has been known to reduce the charge capacity of lithium-ion batteries over time.

I was thinking that I could remove the battery for long sessions and store it away to help extend its life.

That's what I've always been told and have always done, though with the new MB/MBP you might want to leave it in just in case you trip over the adapter wire and disconnect the powersource and losing your work

eee, yes I am concerned that if electricity goes out or power wire comes out, the HDD will suddenly be left without power - dunno if thats good for the HDD.
Perhaps buy a notebook cooler for long sessions at home ?

Knocking the power cord out during these sessions is not what I'm worried about since the laptop is stationary at all times. What concerns me are potential dangers to a machine or even user if a module bay is left exposed. Are there any?

Not that I know off, unless you're working in a very dusty or dirty environment. Since it's seated on your desk and stationary, chances are dusts are not going to get in there readily. You could always use a can air spray and blow them out before you reinstall your battery.

I used to have a Gateway Solo 2500, and I lost the battery for it, and it worked fine. Just be careful of the cord, and save every couple minutes. What I did was since I kept tripping, and I couldn't go anywhere without a battery anyway, I duct-taped the cord to the desk with a little slack between the tape and connector. That worked great, except whenever I tripped it kept bending the prongs. The weird thing is, I lost the gateway power cord too (black hole of my garage...) and I checked the one for my Compaq. It's the same voltage, current, connector, everything! So I used that one for a while.

The only danger is losing your work if it becomes unplugged

Thats just humorous, not the part of you losing your work, but the duct tape.

Ahh yes the Duct tape, one of man's favorite inventions.
