Is anyone aware of any failures with the new model MacBook Pro's with the 9400M & 9600M GT GPU's?

From what I've read both of these cards were effected by the issues plaguing nvidia at present.
Since this laptop was announced after these issues came to light I'm hoping they are not susceptible.

    Any responses would be appreciated.

I believe the issue was with GPUs from the 8x00 series, but that isn't say there won't be issues with the current gen.

Doubt there are any problems. nVidia's issue with 8 series was blown way out of proportion. While it's true several people (more so than normal) had issues, the general majority of GPUs are unaffected. So far I haven't heard of any hardware issues with 9 series cards.

The G96 series of GPU's, to which the 9600M GT belongs, are reportedly also prone to failure.

(not allowed to post links yet!)

I'm torn between a MacBook Pro and a Lenovo T400 now.
Primarily the laptop will be used for video editing, so I need something fairly meaty. As it's for some major projects reliability is essential. This whole nvidia situation has damaged any faith I had in them.

no reports yet on any 9600gt-also,I don't believe the Inq. anymore. Also,I am sure that apple will replace your notebook if something happens.

i believe i have read somewhere stating that the problem that started(?) since 8x00 series were not resolved since the packaging over the GPU was not changed at all(the problem went public a little bit prior to the release of 260/280

maybe because the 9x00 were made in 55um so the heating issue isn't as pronounced?

I'm really skeptical of that the G90 series are prone to failure. :)

The Inquirer are sensationalist, I wouldn't put too much weight into what they say. It's really too early to tell yet if the 9x series is prone to the same problems. I didn't get a new macbook though because I'm weary of the potential issues still lingering with nvidia. Until they come out with a public press release stating they are all fixed, and give a clear plan and explanation of it, instead of continuing to sweep it under the rug, I wont be buying nvidia any time soon.

I'd have to agree that the Inquirer are sensationalist, but they've been right about things like this before.

It's hard to spend 1600€ of your hard earned on something you have some reasonable doubts about.

The GeForce 9400M and 9600M GT found in the MacBook/MacBook Pro respectively aren't affected by the same solder issues as the GeForce 8600 series. Quite honestly, The Inquirer post nothing but bull**** and blow everything out of proportion.

IIRC, the solder points were not the issue, it was just a bandage to help prevent the underlying problem of the inferior packaging being used to house the chips. The packaging could literally collapse under extreme heat and pressure from the cooling system. I believe it was the crappy materials they used in manufacturing the packaging that not only caused excess heat build up (didn't transfer the heat to the cooling as well), but it couldn't tolerate a lot of heat also and so could fail.

They have also been wrong about things like this before. The inquirer is not a news source.

However, if you are skeptical about the 9 series gpu's, you should be. Nvidia swept their previous problems under the rug. why be involved with that company now? Wait for more reliable information to come out, or choose ati for the time being.

No issues on mine. I think this Nvidia issue has been blown out of proportion.
Don't have an issue with my Asus with a 9500m GS either, and that's overclocked.

The rate of failure of nvidia 8series is higher than the failure rate of the standard failure rate of any card but this problem has been blown WAY out of proportion

Well it's a little early yet to be getting reports of 9x series failures, they were just released not long ago.

Haven't heard too many issues about the new NVIDIAs on the MBP, the majority were on the 8 series. Fingers crossed!

of course, the 9 series hasn't been around that long either.

i got one of the first 8600m gt gpu's to come out, and it JUST died a few weeks ago. the problem isn't going to show itself immediately (if it even is a problem).

Whatever happened to computers being built like a tank and lasting for many years?
One of my brothers has an old Dell server (486) that is still chugging along to this day. My mom still uses her emachines with windows 98 and it's still running 10 years later.

I think I'm gonna take a chance and get a new MacBook Pro.
I suspect nvidia contributed to this situation with their denial while computers manufacturers were saying it is a legitimate problem.

Is there any chance the Apple stores in the US will do the educational discount for students from Europe?
Could save myself €150 if they do.

    Forgot about NYC sales tax.
That would kill any potential saving.

    Don't need to tell me!
I've watched the gradual slump as my week in NYC draws nearer.
