I don't know if Apple has released a formal release date. I'm taking a guess at mid-March or June at the latest.

O.K. - then that's probably what its going to be. Apple usually sticks to their dates much better than other companies, like MS. However, if you're thinking about getting one, I'd wait a month or two to let Apple work out all the bugs.

Apple doesn't give release dates. All of their releases are top secret and they often get their legal team after websites that leak any upcoming product information (whether it's true or false).

Most companies do not want you to know what they have coming next (so you don't wait on a purchase), but Apple is notoriously tightlipped when it comes to new releases.

The 'shipping in February' date on their site is for the new 15.4" MacBook Pro only - not the 17" model.

    Hmm....

After thinking about it, I believe you're right. Rahul - not to take you down or anything, I don't know if you're right. If you are, could you give us a link to Apple's site saying the release dates concerning the 17" PB Pros. However, Sowelu I don't believe Apple's release dates are top secret, at least not the general ones (I mean, the Intel thing was leaked by Apple themselves). Steve Jobs keeps the Apple community updated every year at the MacWorld Confrence every year at San Francisco.

What I meant was, Apple new releases are top secret *until* they are officially released (whether it be by Steve Jobs during his famous Keynotes, or just a usual Apple roll out). Of course Apple let everyone know they were going to Intel a few moths ago, but they didn't say what products specifically would be released and when (which is what we are talking about here).

In fact, there are many angry iMac users who just purchased the newly updated G5 version a month ago, and now there is the new Intel version - no one knew. Apple releases are always zipped until the day they are released (unless some Apple Rumor site leaks it first). It's what makes events like MacWorld so exciting and almost crazy at times.

You will not know when the 17" MacBook Pro or any other upcoming products will be released until Apple/Jobs officially announces them (or if a good source leaks the info). That's the way Apple operates and as mentioned above, many other companies have the same policy as well.

    Hmm...

Well, I believe you're correct in that aspect. Some things Apple announces, so that everyone knows about it (PB Pro), yet at the same time, they release some top-secret things (iMac update).

Hmmm, I don't think you're understanding what I am trying to say. In a nutshell:

Apple does NOT announce ANY upcoming new products UNTIL the day they are released. They will however announce things like updates to an OS, platform changes and anything else not related to releasing and selling actual products (like Notebooks, Desktops, iPods, etc.)

Apple obviously knew they were going to release the new MacBook Pro and the Intel iMac for months in advance, but they were tightlipped about it UNTIL the day they were released.

So, both the MacBook Pro AND the Intel iMac were kept secret until Steve Jobs announced them at MacWorld this past Tuesday. They are both new Apple products that even the best rumor sites couldn't predict.

Traditionally, at every Steve Jobs Keynote (MacWorld, etc.) - the SECOND the Keynote is over, Apple quickly updates their site (to the minute) showing the now NEWLY reveled Apple Products. It's very nicely done and makes these events exciting. Some items may be available to purchase today, some you may have to wait a few weeks, but once they are announced, they are considered released.

I think you might be confusing the fact that the MacBook Pro isn't ready to ship yet as an upcoming future Apple Product that was just announced and not released. That's not the case. Just like there are plans for new updated iBooks, iPods and more MacBook Pros - but they are not yet released until Apple shows them on their site - regardless of when they ship them.

This is why there is NOT going to be a date as to when the 17" MacBook Pro will be released until Apple makes it official and announces it as they do all their other products.

Apple is going through a huge transition right now so the guesswork will be harder when it comes to what will be released next and when. Rumor has it that on or around April will be the next wave of surprises - and that perhaps a 13" WideScreen mini MacBook Pro or iBook (MacBook?) will be announced/released. Now that's what *I* am waiting for!

No, I understand perfectly on what you're trying to say - I have a different view on the matter, however. I believe that Apple's marketing campagin on the new products front is what I said before - they like to emphasize/leak some things more over than others like with the PB Pro and iMac (not top-secret like the other post). I do agree that they formally announce things only at Keynotes, however, most of the general public already anticipated Intel PBs, not so much desktop Apples as they weren't emphasized as much.
