I plan to buy a MBP soon, but without applecare. If after the first year the computer experience problems can i just buy applecare when something goes wrong and get it fixed that way? Basically can i skim applecare if nothing happens and get it only when things go bad?

No. You have to buy it in the first year.

If they let you skim nobody would buy unless it was needed.

You have until day 365 after purchase to purchase and activate AppleCare for the year 2-3 warranty coverage, and some people wait until later in that 1st year since the notebooks themselves are somewhat pricey.

You cannot activate AppleCare on any notebook once the 12-month window of original warranty has elapsed; registration is tied to serial # and purchase date.

I personally haven't but I know people who have. If you get it from someone with high feedback you're safe. They just send you the registration number and you're good to go. Best way to save a $100 or so.

I've bought 5 AC's from this seller @ Ebay over the past year for my family and friends, all registered as legitimate at Apple. I avoid people who will just email you the code - too much chance for that code to be pirated or fake.

This seller mails you the intact, sealed and unopened AppleCare box. I highly recommend him. He sells the current, same as available @ Apple.com, and puts a few up every couple of weeks or so.

Makes me wonder how these people get their apple care cheap enough to profit off 100 off retail.

You have to buy the extended 2 years before the 1st year that comes with your new laptop expires....that is you have to buy and activate the extended apple care before 365 days after you bought it.

Like Chelseafc65 is considering, I've purchased my MacBook Pro without Applecare, but intend to buy it before the first 365 days are over. This will extend the warranty by two years on top of the one year warranty you get with the laptop. The only thing you will miss out on is telephone support, which is valid for 90 days after the purchase date. However, I bought my MBP from an authorized seller and service centre which is located near to where I live. They have their own service department to whom I can take the MBP in case of problems, and I can also phone them. Really gives me peace of mind to know I can service my Mac directly by talking face to face with people...
