I've noticed that recently refurbished current gen macbook pros have been up for sale from apple. They run $100 cheaper than the student discount of $1799.

What is the typical quality of these refurbished models? Are you able to upgrade to the 3 year applecare plan after purchase?

Most importantly though, do the refurbished models hold up as well as "new" models.

    They're most likely just returns.

Well they actually go through a personal inspection by professionals at the Apple HQ in California (unlike the new ones which I shipped straight out of manufacturing in China) so some could say they are even better than the new ones.

I would so go for the refurbished unless you want a perfectly new MBP.

The condition actually may be better than new since they are individually tested. Apple's refurbs are highly regarded. If you do not care about brand new, then I would definitely go refurb.

I bought a refurbished macbook recently and it arrived just like it was brand new except for the fancy box. There was not one scratch on the shiny macbook cover.
