    "Refurb" MBP 2.2 2011 for 1800?

So a buddy of mine asked me for my advice, and I can't say I could offer a straight answer, because I really don't know.

The MBP in question is a 2011 15 inch 2.2 model with a hi-res anti glare screen. The asking price is 1900, but he figures he can get it for ~1800, maybe ~1850 shipped. This was a unit about 4 months old, with one major repair on it. The owner had dropped "something" on the cover of the MBP, denting the aluminum cover, shattering the screen, and somehow killing the mobo. Assuming it dead, he bought a new one. However, he later got it repaired by Apple at a hefty cost. Now with two units, he wants to sell the old one.

His question, technically, it should still be under warranty correct?

And second, "could" there be any lasting damage from this? The way I see it, if the motherboard itself needed to be replaced, what's to say the other components weren't damaged in the process?

And is $1800-1850 a good price for such a unit?

It seems fair if everything else is working. I think Apple Refurbs from Apple for this model go for $2000 so he would be saving some money.

20% discount off brand-spankin'-new for a computer that's had a catastrophic fall and related repairs? Maybe I'm wary of damaged goods, but that doesn't seem like a good deal to me.

Well, it'd sell for $2180 at the Apple outlet (2200+150 -15% discount +9% tax), and more than $2500 new.

That's about $300-400 cheaper than an Apple refurb, and $700 cheaper than new.

Assuming it's covered (which I'm not sure is), it makes far more sense to put that money towards the extended warranty, which is just $300. No amount of pristine condition beats good ole' warranty.

However, one thing I am worried about is... would I need proof of the repair done by a certified technician? Or would they already "know"?

    Are you sure?

    Configure - Apple Store (U.S.)

When I do a build-your-own of the MacBook Pro 15" 2.2 GHz, choose the hi-res matte screen and otherwise leave the options alone, it comes out to $2,349.

    Positive. 2350 * 1.09 = ???

Do you live in a state without tax? I live in California. I'd get Amazon pricing, since they're tax-free, but sadly, they don't offer high-res models.

^Did you buy it in 2010 or in 2011?

    Was it pre-tax?

bought it in 2011 about a week after the refresh in Feb. Seems to me someone bought it and then returned it because the line was refreshed a few weeks later. But for $600 off list the i5 with no heat issues was a good deal IMO.

with sales-tax (5%) it came out to $1995

Coco battery says the computer is around 8 months old.

Yeah, he provided the serial #, as well as the AppleCare invoice for the repair. The logical board, keyboard, the screen, and the top cover have been replaced.

As long as he gives you the receipt for the Apple payment, any repair papers a long with it and stuff like that you should be set. Just ask him to scan+send the repair papers over so you can match up the serial #s before buying.
