Anyone have any news concerning the details of the rumored upcoming refresh? I've been looking to get a notebook computer, and was curious if they were actually going to be making the MacBooks more worth the money, as even with the $200 student discount I don't feel like it's even worth it, what with the $1009 Compal IFL-90 I also have in the running.

Well, no new rumours, but there's still the rumour that the MacBook will turn aluminum and feature Santa Rosa. If this proves true, look at the update happening later this month or in early November.

But another possibility is Apple skipping the Santa Rosa refresh for the MacBook altogether and updating the MacBook with Penryn in early 2008.

If Apple made a secret exclusivity agreement with Intel to start running the full Penryn line in November at the same price scheme as currently used... I'd be sold on getting a Mac.

Well, Apple and Intel do have quite strong ties...like they had the 2.8 GHz Core 2 Extreme on the new iMacs before everyone else.

Not to forget the current rumor that Apple got first dibs on all of the 3.2GHz and 3.0GHz Penryn-based Xeon chips.

So it wouldn't surprise me if Apple was to get another deal for its mobile line. I don't see it happening, however.

Without a substantial price cut, deal, or tech upgrade, my likelihood of buying a Mac significantly decreases. Community college student in Massachusetts = No havey $2500 for tech I can get anywhere else for $1,500.

But yeah, with the Asus Eee having fouled out, I'm back to looking at the high end of the spectrum from $800-$1,500. If Apple's refresh makes it more worth the money, the reach away may be acceptable.

Well, if budget is your number concern, the Macs may not be right for you...

Budget is a major concern, as is the fact that I've had friends screaming at me not to get the MacBooks due to massive, massive issues they've had with theirs.

What types of issues? We've seen them all in this forum, and none seemed insurmountable.

Main issue with me = Price.

Main issue with other people = Slowdown, accessory failure.
