I am a first time Apple buyer...a Macbook Air for my daughter at college. We'd like to buy a few accessories for her dorm room....an external keyboard and mouse. Rather than just buy the Apple offerings, I'm wondering if others would recommend something different....for example Logitech?
Also...is there a backlit keyboard (Saitek?) that is compatible with the Macbook Air?
Also, we bought a superdrive and a 500gb time capsule. I do understand the superdrive must be directly hooked up to the MBA...not via USB hub. But, will other devices work ok with a hub, and if so, which usb hub is recommended?

    thanks in advance!

I use a Microsoft keyboard with my Mac. They have good Mac support oddly enough.

A bluetooth mouse and keyboard would also work.

The external SuperDrive requires more power than a standard USB port can supply which is why it must be directly connected to the one on the MBA.

As for accessories, I would say a nice wireless mouse/keyboard combination would be great. Since it doesn't sound like budget is a huge issue, check out the Logitech diNivo BT set for Mac. On top of that, a nice pair of speakers would be nice as well as a multifunction printer for printing papers and assignments. As a student, I'd also say that a spare AC adapter that she could carry in her bag permanently for around campus charging is invaluable.

If you want to go crazy, get her a Fujitsu ScanSnap. Hands down the best companion for a student that gets a lot of paper they might lose or just don't want to sort and carry around. Pricey though, very pricey.
