I'm considering switching my laptop system to a Mac. I use a Sony Vaio TX650P today (which I dont intend to get rid of since it is the best laptop ever built) so I'm looking for something as small as that. The "smallest" and "lightest" I found at apple.se is a 13" MacBook. I went to a store to see it, and man, it is huge compared to the Vaio and it weights almost twice as much.

So my question is, does anyone know of a much ligher and smaller Mac? If there isnt any, does anyone now of any rumors on that matter (post me links, I googled but since I did not have anything solide to google on I failed)?

Yeah, the macbook is pretty heavy for its class, but it is 13.3" not 12.1" which would be mainly ultraportables, it's in the middle. The powerbook's are great Mac labtops you can check them out, you should post something similar like this thread in the "What should I buy" Topic, and include the faq in it, you will get a lot of great responses and more people will view it as well and shed their knowledge. Best of luck.

From everything Apple was saying when the MacBook came out, it was the final piece in their portable lineup. It sounds like they are just going with the 3 sizes as is. Now, knowing Apple they could drop a bomb in a week and release a new 12" MacBook Pro or something, but I doubt it. At least not until the XServes and Mac Pros are updated and everything is Intel. Then maybe you will see things like that, but not before then, IMO. Again, with Apple you never know.

If Apple were to release a new MacBook/MacBook Pro model, I would have to guess that it would be when Apple refreshes their notebooks with Merom.

Yeah, in comparison to something like the TX, the MacBook or MacBook Pro would seem like behemoths. I wouldn't hold my breath though for Apple to ever actually make something like the TX though, although it would be sort of interesting if they did try.

Personally, I love the idea of those ultraportables like the TX (and for a long time I used to lust after those kinds of supersmall laptops, all the way back to some of the old Toshiba Libretto things)......... but in practice, I've kind of found them to be of sort of limited usefulness, since I find the keyboards so difficult to type on and the screens so tiny comparitively to view text, etc. on. And at that point, PDA's or smartphones end up doing most of the remaining things I can see myself using a TX for.

That's just me though. Personally my current laptop is a Vaio S360, and I think Sony's S series is really perfect for me in terms of size and capability. However, I'm in the process of selling it, and I'm currently planning on getting a MacBook Pro, since I really just want to go back to owning a Mac again (I used to own a few Power Macs, and I still use Macs at work, but I have been using PC laptops the last few years).
