Ok, so I clearly haven't pinpointed the problem which is why I'm posting here. But since receiving the macbook pro unibody (17") a few weeks ago, all is fine and dandy, but sometimes there are lock ups and lonnnng load times.

Two examples are, when using sequential (yes I hate iphoto, I just want something like irkfanview for windows, simple and to the point) sometimes when I open a picture it takes like 10 seconds or more to load. Does this matter with how many pictures is within the folder?

And the biggest assumed culprit of all, firefox. It seems that firefox tends to freeze up for a while and then return to normal quite often. In some bad cases, my computer just stops responding. As in everything displays normally but I can't type anything or move my mouse.

I'm pretty sure I shouldn't have any ram issues, although I tried googling for a ram scanner but the closest thing I found was a crucial ram scanner that just recommends me to buy more ram (duh). So I'm guessing this is probably an osx and/or firefox problem.

Any of you guys have similar problems?

You could try repairing disk permissions using Disk Utility. Otherwise, you've either been infected by a rare OS X virus, or it's more likely a hardware issue.

I'll give the repairing disk permissions a try. Not sure what that means exactly.

As for simply returning it, it's kind of hard for me to replicate the problem. So they'd probably stare at it wondering what's wrong, if anything.

By the way are there any programs that can scan if you have bad sectors in your hard drive or ram? I bet there's a program already installed in osx, but I'm still used to windows and such.

You can use the disk utility, which is already installed with OS X, or you could use Onyx. They both work great, and should help you identify your problem! ;)

loading pictures shouldn't take that long, maybe its the software your using... just viewing a picture, why open it at all, when you can use Quickview to look though tons of pictures fast and easy.... if its changing something.. I dunno.. opening a picture in Gimp on my MBP is faster than 10 seconds... not sure why a simpler program would take longer.

as far as your other problems.. I dunno.. if its just happening in firefox, try getting rid of some extensions you have on in there... or stop using it and try safari for awhile and see if you still have the issue, to know for certain if its firefox

Well preview does the job for 1 picture but I can't cycle to the next picture in the folder using that. As for quickview, is that a separate downloadable app? I did a quick google and I couldn't find any solid answers (then again I didn't spend 30 minutes, but usually you find what you want on the first page if it exists)?

I think he's referring to quicklook. The function where you click almost any type of file, and press the spacebar. A viewer comes up without actually launching any applications. Quite useful...

My bad.. never see the name so didnt remember it clearly.. its called quicklook.. not quickview...

Quicklook is the built in viewer for files in Leopard... basically select a file and hit the space bar and it opens it in quicklook... pictures... documents... whatever... and lets you view them. while the quicklook window is popped up, you can click and select, or use arrow keys.. to select through multiple files and see each one...

I don't like iPhoto either... and don't use it. I make my own directory structure and keep track of my files manually.. if i just want to view them, I use the arrow keys and quicklook... and go through them fast and quick.

If you want to have more control, you can always highlight multiple pictures and Cmd+O to open them all up in preview in the same preview window to switch between them.. thats how I looked at stuff before Leopard and Quicklook... but Quicklook is easier to use, and loads stuff in near instant

Very interesting, never knew that space opens quicklook. It's pretty nice, except that if you keep pressing right arrow, it stops because it's navigating the folder as you would see it. Wish I could just keep hitting the right arrow to keep cycling through the next pic. That's pretty much why I downloaded Sequential.

Are there any other recommended picture viewers that's almost like quicklook but allows you to lazily cycle through the folder with one arrow to view the pics in order?

Try the up and down arrows.
