Hey all got my friend into mac finally and he has a brand new Macbook Pro 15-inch. He wanted to buy more ram (obviously i advised save some money install it yourself)

He also still owns a HP Business Notebook model nc8430, which has 4gigs of ram. My question is will the HP ram work in his MBP? I went to crucial and used their memory tool to look up by make and model.

    The HP takes:

    Part #: CT541685 • DDR2 PC2-5300 • CL=5 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR2-667 • 1.8V • 256Meg x 64 •

    His model MBP Takes:

    Part #: CT687602 • DDR2 PC2-5300 • CL=5 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR2-667 • 1.8V • 256Meg x 64 •

So will it work? Any harm in trying or might it damage the machine??

    Thnx!

    Yes, the RAM should work.

Yea that'll work. The numbers are all the same (cept the part #).

No damage would happen if you put in the wrong speed memory, other than the MBP yelling at you with annoying beeps. Those memory spec's are identical so you can safely transfer the memory without worry, as stealthsniper96 and Lithus said above.

Odd, he tried the ram and he got the fore mentioned beeps when he put in the new ram from the hp. Says the screen would not come up, put back in old ram and it works fine.

Would zapping the pram maybe fix that? (do macs even still use that?)

Yea, he could try it, but I can only think that he might not have put it in correctly.

Maybe tell him to try again. And see if the ram in the MBP works vice-versa, in the HP. Maybe theres something wonky with the ram specs.
