    Hey,

Im buying the New MBP today or tomorrow. I have one problem, i need more than 2gb of ram and the 4gb option is $575 extra with my student discount(pretty expensive)...so i was thinking that 3gb would be the perfect amount of memory, so i think i might buy a 2gb stick of ram on newegg and swap it out for one of the 1gig sticks thats already in there.

    Now for the questions:
Firstly, i dont have alot of experience putting in parts in notebooks, i have done some work on desktops but im assuming those are Alot easier. Is it safe for me to do this? Are there any tutorials on the internet? Will it void my warranty? Do you have any advise for me? One more thing, just to make sure what type of ram does the new MBP take? can anyone find any cheap deals?

Thanks for all of your help.

not only are their online tutorials, it will be in your user manual as well, the one thing that nearly every poster seems to forget they have ;P :p :p, look that over and you can't go wrong.

seriously though, it is a very very simple process, if you have a limited knowledge of the screwdriver you will be fine.

you will not void the warranty.

    the MBP's take DDR2 667 (PC2 5300)

currently on newegg.com there is one mac-certified stick of this available from mushkin

actually you could also get this as well, for $10 more????? although you will have an extra 1gb stick that you won't really need, haha

my advice is to wait a few weeks and see what becomes available and at what price, you don't necessarily need mac-specific ram, but you do need to make sure other users have not had problems with it.

it looks like a few reviews of this Corsair 2gb say it works fine in MB's and MBP's

if I were to buy a MBP right now, I would just use it with 2gb until Corsair releases 2gb sticks of mac-memory or a 4gb set. I tend to always get corsair however and many people have had just as much success with other brands.

also, why do you need more than 2gb's of RAM? what are you using it for? there are many pro apps out there that can take advantage of this much ram, and even some of Apple's more basic iLife apps to an extent.
