Is the proper RAM for the MBP PC2 5300 or 5400?

Right now I believe I have 2x1GB of PC2 5300, but Im planning on buying a stick 1x2gb that is PC2 5400. Would that work or should I have 2x2GB sticks of the 5400?

Keep in mind I have the 2.16ghz MBP, and max readable RAM is 3GB i beleive.

i think it's ok to use 5400 but i'm not 100% sure. in any case, why would you want to buy 2x2gb sticks when you can only handle 3gb?

getting 2x2GB would allow him to still have it as dual channel, which increases speed immensely.

^ it hardly increases immensly, it is very minor at best, and in actuality, it might not properly utilize dual channel since all 4gb would not be recognized, I would just stick to what you have, why do you want to move from 2x1GB to 1x2GB?

unless you mean you are going to use one of the old sticks for a total of 3gb, i guess that makes sense, I would not be worried about whether you are utilizing dual channel or not, and just stick to your plan.

Yeah my plan was to just have 1x2, and 1x1, totalling 3gb. But as I was doing the checkout, the total for one stick came to $52.50, which is still a good price I guess, but not as sexy as the 39.99 initial price tag. Add shipping, and taxes, I realized I dont really need 3 gb and I probably wouldnt notice a difference. Since my rent went up $250/month starting this year, Im finding myself spluging less and less :(

the jump from 2gb to 3gb would not be extremely noticeable unless you are doing very intensive work, you might just hold off for the moment.
