I have got 2 HDDs in my PB12". If I do a RAID0 using Tiger, would I get a performance hit instead of getting more speed from the HDDs?
-
My thought is more speed, but I am far from an expert.

do you really have 2 hdd's in your 12" powerbook?

He probably thought partitions are hdds.

No computer less than 15" large have two drives. You probably have two partitions.

if you have two partitions, there is no point in putting them in any type of RAID array. it will just decrease performance without any of the intended benefit.
if you removed the CD drive to be able to add a second hard drive, then, unfortunately, there is still almost no benefit to running the hard drives in RAID 0. since the powerbook doesn't have any hardware doing the raid, its just going to suck down more cpu power. any performance gains in hard drive speed will be offset by the fact your cpu will be working overtime. and your battery will die faster.
this is assuming that your cpu is going to be the bottleneck in a lot of newer applications, since it is a 12" powerbook. -

Maybe I'm just being picky today.
The Dell Latitute E6400 can be shipped straight from the factory with primary hdd + "7200 RPM Encrypted Hard Drive with Free Fall Sensor up to 160GB". Most thinkpads can also have dual hdd bays by forfeiting the optical drive bay. -
Yes I do have 2 HDDs in my 12". Threw out the optical drive in favor of another HDD with some help from MCE.
My main purpose would be to run it as a netbook with some light image editing and doing slideshow presentations to my clients. The heaviest applications I will have is probably the photoshop and itunes. -
Ah, interesting modding there.
Anyway, unless you have a RAID0 capable chipset...the OS will use software RAID, which is very slow. So I'm guessing performance hit. -
Thanks. That was what I am thinking also. I have seen a number of people who did the same thing to their MBPs and claim to have performance increases. But since mine is an old PB, the same might not hold true.
Hopefully I can get some opinions from people who actually did it or I would just go and be the guinea pig. -

Can't the PB already do what you want? If it can't.. just buy a cheap $250 netbook. It's should be more powerful than your apple PB and It can do everything you need for a cheap price.

I didnt want to add another machine to my collection and if I can squeeze more out of my PB, why not? A netbook is nice but I just cant get use to the small screens.
RAID 0 on my PB
