You can try but Apple's prices are set. Going through Apple's educational store is about the only thing you can do and that will give you between $50-$200 off depending on what you want to buy. Apple is not like Dell or HP in that they you can't haggle your way with the sales person. You can try haggling all you want (whether it is at an Apple Store or with a sales representative named "Davde") but it won't do any good.

There are plenty of places to find inexpensive (you don't want cheap) MacBooks, MacBook Pros, and MacBook Airs. Those locations have been discussed ad nauseum here in the forums so it will take a simple forum search to find them. Some stores (I think Mac Mall does this) incorporate the education discount for everyone while others will take prices even lower. There is one store here in Cincinnati (they have multiple locations across major cities in the U.S.) that was selling the entry level MacBook Pro for $1000. I forget what it was called but essentially they were using the $100 Apple educational discount and then taking things off by a further $100.

Microcenter, that is the name of the store I couldn't think of! There is one in Cincinnati and they sell the baseline 13" MBP for $1000 (it is $999.99 over here so I call it $1000). I had a friend buy one from them shortly after I picked up my Core i7 13" MBP and I was kind of ticked off as I likely would have saved the $500 and just gone with that instead. Oh well.
