On the macbook pro, 15 inch. If I select the glossy widescreen option, instead of the standard matt screen, the screen still uses LED lighting right?? I don't need to keep the standard option for LED backlight correct?

    Thanks

    Frank

edit: just a really random question, but do the Macbook pro's have free fall protection on the HDD's??

All Macbook Pro machines have LED backlights.

The 15.4-inch MacBook Pro no longer uses CCFL-backlighting, so yes, any new MacBook Pro you configure now is LED-backlit :).

And yes, the MacBook Pro has hard drive shock detection!

Thanks so much for the hastly responses guys!!!!

    I'm about to order a 15.4 inch Macbook Pro tomorrow. 4gb DDR2 RAM - 200gb 7200RPM HDD, 2.4ghz, 8600gt 256.

I'm most excited about the LED screen, the backlit key board, and of course the new 45nm C2D. 2.4ghz on that is like a 3.2ghz 65nm C2D. And also excited about having such a powerful laptop in the first place. Never had a high end laptop like this. Desktops yes (custom build them) but never a laptop.

One last question, is it possible to have apple upgrade my GPU later on to the 512mb version??

a funny thing. the guy at the apple store knew that the macbook pro's had LED's, and i asked if the macbooks did. they dont, but he and i had to look it up on the apple site. we knew LED was the new thing, and they are all LCD screens, but we had no idea what the older screen was called. it was the funniest thing. so it's actually called CCFL? interesting. (i sell computers, and i learn something new everyday.)

Yes, CCFL, "Cold Cathode Fluorescent Light" display.

TheCarLessDriven, unfortunately, Apple can't uprade the GPU later to 512 MB, you have to get the higher end model if you want the 512 MB graphics card.

And thepreacha619, that is correct, the conventional backlit displays are known as CCFL-backlit :).

So they cant just swap the 512mb version in later?? I don't mean just upgrade the memory on the GPU, but the actual card itself. You sure?? Because alienware does that for people, as long as the new card they want will fit in the laptop/slots

Nope, the CPU and GPU are soldered into the motherboard on Apple machines. On some other manufacturers they aren't, but Apple does solder them, so no go on upgrading.

Nope sorry. If ya order it with 256MB it stays at 256MB. No way to change it later.

Oh well, I'm not in dire need of 512mb. Im not gonna be gaming on it. I may put sims 2 on it though, thats a good game when traveling, haha. (Im sure it would handle that fine)

And what about the free fall protection on the HDD's??

    Actually, its quite close.
Penryn is a minor release, and mainly uses lest power, its not faster, a C2D 65nm is no slouch, a 3.2GHz 65nm is definitely faster then a 2.4GHz 45nm.

    umm. yeah.

i don't know exactly what you are expecting as far as performance, but a 45nm 2.4ghz core 2 duo is going to perform about... well... exactly the same as a 65nm 2.4ghz core 2 duo.

its a good buy. just don't pay for the 4GB ram upgrade if you can help it.

use newegg.com instead. other than that you are set.

guys, can you answer my question about the HDD protection??

I am an electronics engineer & I know what I know about the CPU, I don't want to get into a debate about it.

Sammy already did in his response on the first page - it has the same hard drive parking system as the MacBook.

Oh, looks like it was an edit. Cool, I was under the assumption it didn't have any protection on it.

    Thanks for all the input!

Technically, you can upgrade the logic board, from the lower graphics card, to the new one if you really wanted to.

Though it would void the warranty, cost a lot of money, and I don't think anyone has done it before.
(I'm talking about replacing the WHOLE logic board with the better higher end one)

Right, and on a feasibility scale of 0 to 10, that comes down as a -3. Though, of course, technically speaking, you are correct.

heh, yea I'm just saying it can be done.

Maybe if you went to a third party apple repair place, you might be able to work out a deal where you could pay the difference, if something ever went went with the current logic board. Though apple wont do it.

Yeah, don't get 4GB of RAM from Apple. Get it cheaper @ Newegg.com

How many RAM slots does it have?? Because if I do the 2gb options it says 2 x 1gb, so I would have to get a whole 4gb kit from newegg, and just waste the original 2 gb from the MacBook?

A few minutes spent with the Apple Web site will answer that question.

Yeah, you would be 'wasting' the original 2GB. However, since RAM is so cheap nowadays, you won't be 'wasting' much.
